 The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) invites inquiries, nominations and applications for the position of dean of continuing education and UCLA Extension. Excelling in quality, innovation and impact, UCLA Extension is considered one of the top programs of its kind, offering to more than 35,000 students per year approximately 4,500 classes and non-degree certificate programs to meet the professional development, continuing education and personal enrichment needs of the full spectrum of nontraditional students as well as companies and organizations throughout and beyond the Los Angeles region. As the chief executive officer for UCLA Extension, the dean provides strategic vision for and operational leadership of the school, which has an organization of approximately 1,500 instructors and 250 staff, and a self-supporting annual operating budget of nearly $65 million. The dean works to advance academic excellence and outreach and engagement; encourage programmatic innovation; enhance excellence through diversity in educational programs and in the recruitment of instructional staff and students; and foster an organizational culture benefiting each of its constituencies — faculty, administrators, staff, students and the public at large. The dean serves as UCLA Extension’s public voice, articulating its contributions to UCLA and to local, state, regional, national and international communities, and pursuing an aggressive development program to build the school’s resources. The dean also oversees Continuing Education of the Bar, a provider of continuing legal education and legal updates, located in Oakland, California. Reporting to UCLA’s executive vice chancellor/provost, he/she serves on the deans council and the council of professional school deans, and collaborates with the chancellor, executive vice chancellor/provost, vice chancellors and vice provosts, deans and department chairs at UCLA and across the University of California system to develop and support new programs and maintain the academic quality of UCLA Extension offerings.

UCLA Extension requires dynamic, innovative and transformative leadership. Candidates must demonstrate vision, creativity and collaborative and managerial acumen, along with a strong commitment to continuing education and to research, teaching and public service more generally; to advancing diversity and inclusion; and to UCLA’s broad vision and public mission. Ideal candidates will have substantial administrative leadership experience; strong visibility within the continuing education community; knowledge of transformative trends in the field; and the ability to exercise leadership at local, state and national levels. Preferred qualifications include an advanced degree and strong academic and administrative credentials; professional accomplishment and administrative experience in continuing education and outreach; experience leading and managing substantial self-supporting programs, including financial management, marketing, online and distance education and human resources; a record of advancing diversity; proven success in— or aptitude for— external relations and development; experience with international programs and partnerships; and a record of success in developing effective relationships between continuing education programs and academic colleagues, administrators, businesses and community organizations.
