University Controller

Yale University seeks a principled, collaborative, and innovative senior leader to be the next University Controller (UC). Reporting to the Vice President for Finance and Chief Financial Officer, the University Controller is responsible for collaborating with individuals across the University at all levels and roles to ensure the University’s financial policies, procedures, operations, and practices are effective and efficient in a highly decentralized environment. As a member of the VP/CFO’s senior leadership team, the Controller also plays a key role in the direction and successful delivery of all financial services at Yale. The UC is the Chief Accounting Officer at Yale and will play an important leadership role in guiding the effective, efficient, and strategic use of resources to support Yale’s education, research, and service missions.

 

The University Controller (UC) reports to the Vice President for Finance and Chief Financial Officer and is responsible for developing, disseminating, and maintaining financial policies, business processes, and supporting best practices necessary to ensure high quality stewardship and management of the university’s financial resources in its decentralized environment. The UC provides leadership, coaching, direction, and development to a team of five talented direct reports and more than 60 staff members under their management.  

 

The UC serves as the University’s Chief Accounting Officer and has direct management oversight for a wide range of institutional financial functions, including accounting (general accounting, gifts, endowments, grants, capital projects), financial reporting, tax planning and compliance, internal costing, treasury operations, student accounts, and policies and financial compliance. The UC is responsible for engaging and collaborating with constituents across the University to ensure the University’s financial policies, procedures, operations, and practices are appropriate, effective, and efficient in a highly decentralized environment. As a key member of the VP/CFO’s senior leadership team, the UC also plays a role in the direction and successful delivery of all financial services at Yale University.

 

As a member of the VP/CFO’s senior leadership team, the UC plays a key role in fulfilling the responsibility of the overall Finance organization which is to support Yale’s mission by consistently providing high quality, cost-effective services, information, and advice while supporting the career development of Finance professionals in a positive work environment. In this senior leadership role, the UC plays a key role in supporting the VP/CFO’s overall goals for Finance.

 

The UC will lead and facilitate innovative business process change, identifying ways to leverage the best use of the university’s resources while maintaining exceptional stewardship through responsible and ethical management and accounting practices. The UC must be an experienced change leader with the ability to evaluate organizational structures and personnel and implement new roles and responsibilities as well as process improvements that align outputs and customer service with the diverse and evolving needs of the university. The selected candidate will be a consensus builder with vision, be comfortable facilitating change and dealing with ambiguity, demonstrate a proven ability to engage various constituencies in difficult and challenging decisions, and have an appreciation for the mission, traditions, and culture of Yale University.
