Research and Teaching Faculty Positions

The Information Networking Institute (INI) at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and CyLab, CMU’s Security and Privacy Institute, are jointly soliciting applications for open research and teaching faculty positions at all levels for CMU’s main campus in Pittsburgh, PA, and Silicon Valley campus in Mountain View, CA.

The INI is an integral department of Carnegie Mellon’s College of Engineering, a Top Ten engineering school as ranked by U.S. News and World Report. The INI offers master’s degree programs in Information Networking, Information Security, and Mobility. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of these fields, the INI collaborates with several departments in the College of Engineering, the School of Computer Science, the Tepper School of Business and the H. John Heinz III College in order to equip students with advanced knowledge in technology as well as a disciplined foundation in business management and policy. INI students have the unprecedented flexibility to take courses across all of these reputable colleges.

CyLab is a university-wide institute with participation from all seven colleges, including the School of Computer Science (ranked #1 by U.S. News and World Report) and the College of Engineering. CyLab’s research faculty is focused on fundamental advances in security and privacy. CyLab includes over 100 faculty participants and houses 14 faculty members from across departments in a 33,000 sq. ft. collaborative research space.

We are currently seeking faculty candidates who support our core technical areas in research and teaching track positions described as:

• Research Faculty: CyLab is currently seeking faculty candidates in security and privacy. Faculty on the research track have a primary responsibility of leading research activities in a relevant discipline while advising M.S. and Ph.D. students at CMU. Research track faculty members are responsible for supporting their own salary, and a research faculty member’s research budget is credited appropriately for teaching.  We anticipate several opportunities for research faculty to teach with the INI.
• Teaching Faculty: The INI is currently seeking faculty candidates that support our core technical areas of Networking, Mobile Systems and Security as well as other closely related areas such as Cloud Computing, Distributed Systems, Embedded Systems, Sensing Systems, Data Analysis and Machine Learning. Faculty on the teaching track have a primary responsibility of designing and leading courses and projects for INI students and typically teach two or three courses per semester, but may also have research and service responsibilities. Candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching a diverse student population. Although preference will be given to those with a documented track record of teaching experience, candidates with a robust research background or experience in industry or government will also be considered for the position.

Both positions are open to individuals who hold a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or closely related fields. Depending on a candidate’s research/teaching history and qualifications, positions will offered be at the appropriate level: Assistant, Associate, or Full Teaching/Research Professor.
