Assistant Vice President, Student & Campus Life

Ithaca, New York

Cornell University seeks an experienced and student-centered leader to serve as Assistant Vice President for Student & Campus Life (AVP). Cornell is both a federal land-grant institution and a privately endowed member of the Ivy League, proud of its egalitarian roots. Its student body is highly diverse, open-minded, and actively engaged in campus life and University governance. This is an exciting opportunity for an accomplished leader eager to cultivate a student experience as distinctive as the University itself.

Reporting to the Vice President for Student & Campus Life, the AVP will provide leadership and vision for a wide range of student engagement programs, activities and services that contribute to an intentional student experience outside of the classroom. The AVP will bring a deep familiarity with trends and challenges in the field of student affairs and the opportunities to enhance student development in an intellectually rigorous environment. The AVP should bring a record of successful leadership, consensus-building, and an ability to build sustaining and effective relationships with diverse constituencies – including students, faculty, staff, alumni and university leadership. The ideal candidate must possess the knowledge, skills, and experience required to exercise strategic and decisive leadership, serve as an advocate for diversity and inclusion initiatives, be highly engaged and visible to students, engage internal and external stakeholders, provide fiscal and administrative oversight, and embrace Cornell’s rich tradition of shared governance.

The portfolio for the AVP reflects Cornell’s commitment to creating a cohesive student experience with a strong focus on student learning, development, engagement, and leadership. The unit will include New Student Programs (including the Carol Tatkon Center), Sorority and Fraternity Life, the Public Service Center, and Campus Activities. The AVP will oversee a budget of over $20 million and approximately 40-full time staff. The AVP will not only provide decisive leadership and management to the offices within the portfolio but also work collaboratively with colleagues across Division of Student & Campus Life (SCL) and the University.
