Instructor/Assistant Professor - English and Humanities

Announcement is hereby made for a full-time, 10-month, tenure-track appointment, beginning the fall 2019 semester on the Michel J. Grant Campus in Brentwood. Suffolk County Community College is an open admissions institution committed to serving a diverse student population in a variety of degree and career programs.

 

This is a Unit III position covered under the Faculty Association of Suffolk County Community College collective bargaining agreement with the College.

 

Job Description

The Department of English and Humanities seeks applicants for a full-time position in English. The successful candidate will have a strong background in teaching composition, as well as experience in teaching freshman- and sophomore-level literature courses. 

 

The College seeks faculty who value the opportunity to form mentoring relationships with our students.  The successful candidate will demonstrate an ongoing commitment to excellence in teaching and to professional development.  The successful candidate will also demonstrate an openness to pedagogical innovation, including, but not limited to, the integration of technology and distance education into the curriculum.  Duties will include:

  • Teach assigned courses in accordance with description published in the College catalog and the approved course outline, incorporating alternative approaches and methods when appropriate and possible.
  • Engage in assessment of college-wide learning outcomes and demonstrate the use of the results of these assessments in courses.
  • Actively participate in departmental, campus and College committees/meetings.
  • Participate in academic advisement and curriculum development.
  • Incorporate an appreciation of diverse lifestyles, cultures and perspectives into courses.
  • Demonstration of professional development/scholarly work in the discipline.

     

    Qualifications

    Required:

    A Master’s degree in English. College-level teaching experience in this discipline or a closely related field.

    Preferred:

    A doctorate in English and community college teaching experience.
