JOB SUMMARY:

At an exciting time in its history, Adelphi University, New York, invites nominations and applications for the position of Associate Provost for Student Success. The University seeks a proven, innovative and collaborative leader capable of bringing a bold, creative vision as well as strong organizational and management skills to the offices of Academic Services and Student Success.

The Associate Provost for Student Success will provide leadership and administrative management to a broad range of academic support service offices charged with supporting student success. The Associate Provost will pursue university goals, policies and practices devoted to student success in the spirit of shared governance and collaboration. The Associate Provost will play a key role in the implementation of the University's long-range strategic vision defined within Momentum: The Strategic Plan for Adelphi University, 2015-2021. The Associate Provost for Student Success will lead a unit charged with realizing a vision of a fully integrated academic and student life experience.

The University's Strategic Plan, Momentum, provides the background for this position. The plan calls for:

  1. Improved student persistence to graduation
  2. Additional student support services
  3. Improved advising
  4. Revision of the First-Year experience and general education
  5. Expansion of living and learning communities
  6. A more vibrant student life
  7. Expansion of graduate student life resources and services and
  8. Fostering a global view throughout the University

The vision for the Associate Provost position is to create new opportunities; broaden and deepen academic and student life connections between and among existing departments; provide more intentional programs designed to enhance student well-being and sense of belonging and engagement; and focus on providing the infrastructure and support for students to achieve their academic goals.

REPORTS TO: Provost & Executive Vice President

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTI

  1. Lead university-wide student success initiatives: Utilizing student progress information and related data create an integrated approach to student success at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  2. Utilize student progress data and analytics to design with faculty advisers and professional advising staff positive interventions to insure student success.
  3. Collaborate on the alignment and integration of academic services with student life units under the Office of the Provost: A diverse array of operational units and resources/services are being reorganized in order to implement a seamless network of student success initiatives. The Associate Provost will be key to this reorganization.
  4. Improve persistence to graduation: The Associate Provost lead the implementation and assessment of initiatives outlined in the “Plan for Student Success: Actions for Undergraduate Student Retention and Degree Completion.”
  5. Lead the expansion of student advisement systems and support resources: The Associate Provost leads the efforts to implement the EAB Student Success Collaborative that will support a developing hybrid model of professional and faculty advising across the academic units.
  6. Lead university efforts to achieve national excellence in student support resources and services: Develop, implement and coordinate a vibrant array of support resources that will create robust and integrated curricular and co-curricular student experiences.
  7. Develop and expand resources and services to insure that Adelphi students understand their roles as citizens of the world: Internationalize the student advising, learning support, student life and co-curricular experiences.

Offices and programs coming together in the realignment include:

  1. Office of Academic Services and Retention
  2. The Learning and Writing Centers
  3. The Learning Resource Program
  4. The Office of Pre-Professional Programs
  5. Mentoring Program Bridges to Adelphi
  6. Center for International Education
  7. Student Access Office
  8. Center for Career and Professional Development

The University is enhancing its efforts to create coordinated systems through which academic, personal, health and behavioral concerns are all considered as part of a holistic view of a student's experience. The Associate Provost will be the primary advocate for these efforts.

REQUIREMENTS:

The successful candidate in this competitive national search will provide leadership and vision for the Student Success programs and activities. To best serve Adelphi University, the ideal candidate will have many of the following professional qualifications and personal characteristics:

  1. Professional qualifications and accomplishments that earn the respect of the academic services and support communities, including a demonstrated record of excellence appropriate for leadership in an innovative and comprehensive model of academic and student affairs with the shared goal of student success.
  2. Credentials sufficient for appointment as a tenured professor in one of the academic departments of the University will be considered for qualified candidates, thus the Ph.D. or Ed.D. is required.
  3. The Associate Provost will show evidence of a commitment to and experience with research in her/his field of expertise.
  4. Experience with utilization of student progress data, curriculum success information and other data to design supports and interventions to assure student degree completion.
  5. Leadership experience including the ability to articulate a vision and to engage others in its implementation. The Associate Provost will be an articulate spokesperson for the benefits of this innovative, integrated approach to student success and will lead the effort at the continuing implementation of the new model.
  6. Management experience including experience with the effective management of a complex unit comprised of academic leaders (deans of the school-based units) who will partner in this new student-centered model to work collaboratively to improve the educational outcomes of the university with particular focus on the graduation rate of undergraduate students.
  7. Commitment and ability to advance diversity goals demonstrated by a recognition of the responsibility and privilege of making an impact in the area of student multicultural community building with a commitment to enhancing numerical and qualitative diversity among students at ADELPHI; and to fostering an inclusive environment for all members of the ADELPHI community; ability to play a leadership role in developing programs, services, and policies that support the realization of the university's aspirations to be a fully diverse community; multicultural fluency and appreciation of difference, strong commitment to inclusiveness, understanding of nuance, and the ability to think intentionally with an awareness of the various ways in which campuses and universities are experienced differently by different students.
  8. Ability to inhabit a high-visibility role with presence demonstrated through a genuine and visible enjoyment and understanding of college students in the widest and deepest sense, with the ability to build trusting and mutually respectful relationships with students, and to serve as a frequent and articulate spokesperson for the university and a highly visible member of the university's leadership team.
  9. An exceptional communicator and attentive listener with superior interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills including experience making excellent presentations to diverse groups; ability to articulate matters of complexity and nuance to multiple and enormously varied groups of stakeholders.
  10. Ability to thrive in and bring order and direction to ambiguous situations, collaborate well with a range of constituencies and work well as a member of an executive leadership team; the ability to observe, listen, learn, and clarify needs while engendering trust quickly; a sense of urgency and engagement; a strong internal moral compass; a personal presence that is active and inclusive, and the qualities of optimism, patience, sound judgment, balance in the face of challenges, strong and constructive problem-solving skills, and a sense of humor.
  11. Sensitivity to team building and leading change will be important as the Associate Provost establishes their leadership of this new and complex organization which absolutely demands boundary-crossing, cross-unit collaboration, and the leadership skills and resiliency to move the unit and its people forward.
  12. A key to the success of the new Associate Provost will likely rest in her/his ability to achieve productive and mutually supportive relationships with the academic unit-based deans. It is expected that the Associate Provost will recognize the key role of the Deans in fully realizing the vision for the new unit and will value their input, experience, and detailed knowledge of the needs of their units.

EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  1. A doctoral degree from an accredited institution is required.
  2. A minimum of 10 years' experience in higher education at the university level, with a record of successful experience in administration, teaching and scholarly activity.
  3. Candidate should have a minimum of five years of increasing administrative responsibility in an academic environment at the university level and should meet the requirements for full professor.
