The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Dean of the College­­ of Liberal Arts (CLA) to commence on July 1, 2019.

UMD is a midsized, comprehensive land and sea grant university with a small-campus feel and large-campus opportunities.  UMD offers baccalaureate, masters, and selected doctoral degrees across a broad range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary fields (http://www.d.umn.edu/).  As the second largest research university in the state, we are dedicated to integrating liberal education, research, creative activity, and public engagement to prepare students to thrive as lifelong learners and globally engaged citizens. UMD recently received ten-year re-accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission and updated our strategic plan (http://www.d.umn.edu/strategic-planning/strategic-plans).

The successful candidate will have a record of distinguished administrative leadership, teaching, and scholarship appropriate for a senior faculty appointment within an academic discipline represented in the College of Liberal Arts. The Dean will be committed to creating a vibrant academic and intellectual climate in the College, foster and champion a collective vision for the liberal arts, exercise creative and consultative leadership, have experience with budgeting and strategic planning, and work effectively with a multidisciplinary faculty, staff, student body, and other units of the University.  The successful candidate will also have a proven record of developing external and internal relations, a successful record of fund-raising, and a sustained record of advancing diversity and inclusion.

Required qualifications include an earned doctorate from a regionally accredited university in a field within the CLA; a minimum of three years of administrative experience at least at the department head or equivalent level; a record of teaching, research, and service that meets the qualifications necessary to be tenured at the rank of Professor in one of the departments within the College; a strong record of administrative leadership and personnel and budgetary management; effective written communication skills; a record of developing external relations with public and private sectors; and a record of commitment to enhancing and maintaining diversity among students, staff, and faculty.

Situated at the western tip of Lake Superior, the international port city of Duluth, winner of Outside Magazine’s Best Town 2014 Tournament, offers an enticing selection of adventures for four season outdoor enthusiasts as well as a rich variety of cultural opportunities, including ballet, theatre, symphony, and art galleries.  Metropolitan Minneapolis/St. Paul is less than three hours south of Duluth.
