Montana State University invites nominations and applications for an innovative academic leader to serve as the Dean of the Graduate School and Associate Vice President for Research. This person reports to the Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs (Provost) with secondary reporting to the Vice President of Research and Economic Development (VPRED).

The Dean of the Graduate School and Associate Vice President for Research will provide leadership, management and administration to the Graduate School. This position will lead the transformation of the Graduate School in terms of recruitment, retention and completion, and will expand graduate education at the Master, Doctoral and post-doctoral levels. This position will serve as a champion for graduate education, and by reporting to both the Provost and the VPRED, it will ensure the integration of graduate training and research in alignment with University priorities.

Founded in 1893 as a land-grant university, Montana State University (MSU) in Bozeman is composed of nine academic colleges and a graduate school and boasts a friendly, supportive faculty and campus environment. Currently, the Bozeman campus hosts an enrollment of over 16,000 students, including approximately 2,000 graduate students, and is among the top 3 percent of colleges and universities in the nation for research expenditures.

Since 1948, The Graduate School has strived to foster an environment that produces outstanding graduate scholars who contribute new ideas and knowledge using creative and innovative approaches to solve challenges in an evolving world. The strategic plan aims to increase the number of graduate students to 2,350 by 2019. The Graduate School will work towards this goal by offering unique degree and certificate programs in established and multidisciplinary areas, such as engineering, business, science and the arts. MSU currently offers 54 master’s degree options, 37 doctoral degree options, including one specialist program, and 13 certificate options, and currently enrolls 1,983 students.   

The Graduate School is a member of the Western Association of Graduate Schools and contains a University Graduate Council. This council serves to advise the Dean on matters of policy. Its key activities are to make recommendations to the Dean about graduate programs and curricula and to promote all aspects of graduate education and the success of graduate students.

The Dean of the Graduate School and Associate Vice President for Research will require significant experience in management leadership roles. Successful candidates are expected to have a terminal degree and a distinguished record of scholarship.  Desired qualifications include qualification for tenure at the full professor level in an academic department at MSU, knowledge of and passion for the land-grant mission; experience in academic administration, budget management, personnel management and strategic planning; evidence of developing successful collaborations and building collegial relations among faculty, students, staff, administration and external stakeholders; demonstrated leadership committed to diversity, equity and inclusion; demonstrated potential to secure resources in grants and gifts; proven integrity and ethical qualities.
