Department Summary:
The Department of Physics at Bridgewater State University (BSU) invites applications for a tenure track assistant professor position beginning September 2019. The department is seeking an outstanding Engineer with expertise in Photonics including PIC Design and Characterization. The successful candidate will bring novel perspectives and insights to undergraduate students through teaching, advising and undergraduate research and support the development of a new degree programs in Photonics Engineering including certificate and B.S. degrees. The candidate will work in the new Department of Physics and Photonics Engineering that builds on the highly successful Department of Physics at BSU. The department has broad and expanding breath of theoretical and experimental based courses with research lab spaces housed in the $98M Dana Mohler-Faria Science Building. Physics at BSU has been recognized nationally for its strong number of majors (approximately 60) and graduates (average 8-10 per year). These numbers reflect a strong student-workforce development history with ties to Photonics/Optics related industries, top graduate schools (recently for biophysics, particle physics, astronomy and general relativity) and our tradition for training high school teachers. With the addition of the new Photonics Engineering program numbers of students, and new paths and opportunities for our graduates are expected to increase. The Department has strong connections and collaborations with AIM Photonics and the region’s AIM Photonics LEAP Academies. The successful candidate will be expected to continue to foster those connections and utilize them in their scholarship and work with students.

Essential Duties:
The successful candidate will be a dedicated and passionate teacher who will teach 12 contact hours per semester throughout the undergraduate curriculum. Significantly, this candidate is expected to help develop an overall vision for the new Photonics Engineering BS program and a Photonics Certificate program. The successful candidate will also demonstrate interest and ability to foster connections through the new Photonics Engineering programs, laboratories, courses and research with Photonics/Optics related industries for the ultimate benefit of students.

 

 

Preference will be given to candidates who will contribute to department culture that is inclusive, student-centered, energetic and emphasizes outside of the classroom experiences.

Required Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Photonics Engineering and or Electrical Engineering specializing in Photonics by September 1, 2019 is required.

Teaching experience and evidence of mastery are required.

Applicants should be strongly committed to excellence in teaching, advising, and research and to working in a multicultural environment that fosters diversity. They should also have an ability to communicate effectively in speaking and writing, to use technology effectively in teaching and learning, and to work collaboratively.

Preferred Qualifications:
Post-Doctoral and/or Industry work with evidence of the ability to support and mentor research at an appropriate undergraduate level is highly desirable.
