President and Chief Executive Officer

Henry Luce Foundation

President and Chief Executive Officer

The Henry Luce Foundation seeks applications and nominations for the President and Chief Executive Officer.  The Luce Foundation will welcome its fourth CEO in the Foundation’s history. In a dynamic time for organizations in the philanthropic community, the President and CEO will serve as a strategic and visionary leader committed to building upon the success and transformation that has occurred within the Luce Foundation in recent years.

Established by Henry R. Luce, the co-founder and Editor-in-Chief of Time Inc., The Henry Luce Foundation seeks to bring important ideas to the center of American life, strengthen international understanding, and foster innovation and leadership in academic, policy, religious, and art communities.

The Luce Foundation’s programs are seen as field-building through strategies of grant-making, convening, and leadership development. Currently, the Luce Foundation pursues its mission through the following grant-making programs: American Art, Asia, Luce Scholars (designed to enhance the understanding of Asia among potential leaders in American society), Higher Education, Public Policy, Theology, the Henry R. Luce Initiative on Religion in International Affairs and the Clare Boothe Luce Program (for women in science, mathematics and engineering).

The individual will join an organization that has a rich history and is poised for even greater success. With key investments already made in technology and organizational structure, the opportunity for the new President and CEO is to ensure the Foundation remains an effective influencer in its areas of focus. This will be done by leading both internally (encourage continuous internal reflection, collaboration, and refinement) and externally (further public awareness of Luce’s values and impact).

The next President and CEO should possess significant leadership experience, relevant to a philanthropic organization or to one (or more) of the Foundation’s program areas.  The successful candidate should demonstrate a proven ability to leverage resources to best support a mission and to develop and implement effective strategies. Building productive relationships within and outside of the Foundation is crucial as is an ability to collaborate thoughtfully and transparently with a governing Board on important matters of mission and direction.  The President and CEO will also be an effective team leader and adept at budgetary management and fiscal administration.

Review of nominations and applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.  The Henry Luce Foundation will be assisted by Jackie Zavitz, J.J. Cutler and Tracie Smith of Heidrick & Struggles.

Nominations and applications should be directed to lucepresident@heidrick.com.
