Emergency Management Faculty Position

The Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA) at the Indianapolis campus seeks to fill one tenure track faculty position at the rank of assistant professor beginning in August 2019. Advanced assistant professors will also be considered.

We seek a candidate to complement our existing strengths and priorities within our multidisciplinary public safety and public affairs programs. We seek candidates with expertise in one, or more, of the following areas: emergency management, risk assessment, crisis management, network management, homeland security, and/or public safety management. We are particularly interested in persons with research and teaching expertise in emergency preparedness, disasters, response and recovery, resilience, mitigation, and similar topics. Currently, we have research and teaching priorities in a variety of domains, including public management, emergency management, public policy analysis, homeland security, local/national security, and criminal justice. SPEA has strong interests in building on our strengths in these growing areas of research and teaching.  

All applicants must present evidence of, or promise for, high-quality research and an ambitious research program. Candidates will be expected to publish in high quality peer-reviewed journals and pursue extramural research funding. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in an appropriate field (e.g., public management, public administration, policy analysis, emergency management, homeland security, economics, political science, criminology, sociology).  SPEA and Indiana University are committed to diversity, and we seek candidates with a demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disabled and ethnic backgrounds of the institution’s students and employees.

Teaching responsibilities include courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels across traditional face-to-face, hybrid, and fully online course delivery. The standard teaching load within the school is four courses per year (2/2 course load), typically with small class sizes.

SPEA is a multi-disciplinary professional school of Indiana University, committed to excellence in research, teaching, and civic engagement. The Indianapolis and Bloomington campuses make up one core school. Among public affairs programs, SPEA programs are ranked highly by U.S. News and World Report. SPEA IUPUI has approximately 125 public safety undergraduate majors, 400 criminal justice undergraduate majors, and 50 graduate students in the Masters of Science in Criminal Justice and Public Safety program. In addition, SPEA IUPUI has approximately 300 undergraduate public affairs students and 300 graduate students in the NASPAA-accredited MPA and graduate certificate programs. SPEA IUPUI also offers a fully online graduate certificate in Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

The MPA program at the IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs at IUPUI is ranked 52nd out of 282 U.S. schools. The school’s nonprofit management program has been ranked in the Top 10 in the country for the past decade and is currently ranked 7th nationally. Our MPA in Public Management is ranked 37th.

IUPUI is a research-intensive institution, with about $300 million annually in external grants and contracts. With over 30,000 students, IUPUI is the third-largest campus in the state, and the IUPUI campus is located in downtown Indianapolis within walking distance of the Capitol, museums and professional sports venues.
