The School of Music in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University seeks a dynamic leader of outstanding national/international reputation to serve as Director of Wind Ensembles. The type and rank of this full-time appointment will be based on experience. The position begins fall 2019.

About the School of Music
Located in one of the most expansive metropolitan centers in the United States and situated in the Sonoran desert, the ASU School of Music supports a broad range of inquiry. Programs within the School of Music lead to the degrees of Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Music with an optional concentration in Music and Culture; Bachelor of Music (BM) in Music with concentrations in music performance, jazz studies, music theatre, music education, music theory and composition, music therapy as well as two minors in music studies and music performance; Master of Arts (MA) in Music with concentrations in ethnomusicology or music history and literature; and Master of Music (MM) in composition, conducting, music education, music performance, performance pedagogy and music therapy. In addition, the school offers a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in composition, conducting and performance and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) with a concentration in music education or musicology, as well as a graduate certificate in theory pedagogy. The Director of Wind Ensembles will strengthen the broader vision of the School of Music: to create an environment that enriches and enlivens the role of music in our society. The successful candidate will provide leadership for the ASU Wind Ensemble program that will shape the future direction of the program and increase the already national and international reputation of the ASU School of Music. This will include collaborative development of new initiatives within and beyond the School of Music and the ability to work with students to reexamine and reimagine the role of the wind ensemble in the 21st century. Additionally, the successful candidate will: conduct on- and off-campus rehearsals and concerts; serve as a teacher and mentor for aspiring conductors at the graduate level; oversee the wind ensemble budget; initiate meaningful collaborations with faculty colleagues, the larger university community and regional professional arts organizations; and pursue creative activity and/or research that meets the highest levels of achievement.

 

Further responsibilities will include recruiting high-quality students regionally, nationally and internationally; teaching graduate conducting seminars in conjunction with the instrumental conducting faculty, and other courses depending upon the candidate’s interests and experience; mentoring and assisting students as they pursue their professional goals; serving on graduate student committees; and working effectively with the administration in service of the mission of the ASU School of Music.  

 

Required Qualifications:

• National and/or international conducting career;
• Demonstrated excellence in wind ensemble conducting and teaching;
• Demonstrated excellence teaching undergraduate- and graduate-level students;
• Vision to guide a 21st century wind ensemble program;
• Experience with and commitment to diverse students and audiences; and
• Doctoral degree in music or commensurate professional experience.

 

Desired Qualifications: Candidates should provide evidence of demonstrated ability in one or more of these areas:

• Directing a wind ensemble program;
• Interdisciplinary creative activity within and outside of the arts;
• Multidisciplinary performances and creative programming;
• Developing curriculum and pedagogy in wind ensemble repertoire and conducting;
• Attracting resources, including research funding grants or other sources of support;
• Program administration and budgeting;
• Teaching or interacting with secondary school music programs; and/or
• Recruitment and retention of exceptional students.
