The Dean of Students reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and provides leadership, direction, and oversight for the Dean of Students Office which includes student support and advocacy; student development, student rights and responsibilities, student conduct; ombuds functions; and emergency preparedness and response. The Dean of Students promotes a campus culture that supports and enhances students’ personal and academic success, a campus community that is caring and accessible for students, faculty, and staff, and an office environment that inspires and motivates staff to provide exemplary services to members of the University community.

Job Summary

The Dean of Students is responsible for supporting students through personal, community, and academic development culminating in a transformative learning experience. The Dean creates opportunities for students to be academically successful and challenges students to be independent, responsible learners, and the Dean’s Office implements programs and services that promote a sense of belonging for every student at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee.

Further, the Dean of Students is responsible for effective collaboration with the faculty, academic departments and student leaders to help students better understand their learning environment; identifying and communicating student opinions to the faculty and administration and, at the same time, communicating and explaining the reasons underlying university policies and regulations to students; providing leadership for student-oriented functions that promote civility, celebrate diversity and promote an inclusive campus climate; providing consultation on student conflict resolution, student due process and appeals. More generally, the Dean broadly supports the Senior Student Affairs Officer by coordinating special projects and attending official functions as required.

The position requires a commitment to the ideals and principles of student development and leadership development; multiculturalism, social justice, and diversity; strong human relations skills and high emotional intelligence; effective management, motivation, conflict resolution and problem-solving skills.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree or terminal degree in Higher Education Field
At Least seven years progressively responsible and relevant experience in student affairs and/or student life post master’s degree

Preferred Qualifications

• A demonstrated record of successful leadership that is visionary, collaborative, and team-oriented preferably within a university with a highly diverse student population.
• Progressively responsible management experience including supervision of professional staff, direct oversight of budgetary resources
• Experience providing programs and services that improve student success and retention, including experience with providing programs and services for multicultural and multi-identity students
• Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with persons of diverse socio-economic, racial/ethnic, international, and LGBTQ populations within a social justice framework.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple competing priorities and coordinate complex administrative operations
• Demonstrated problem-solving and crisis management skills including ability to communicate effectively with students, family, and community members in crisis and duress
• Demonstrated ability to build relationships and teams with diverse individuals and across a large organization
• Demonstrated ability to provide consultation on student conflict resolution, student due process, and conduct appeals
