Assistant Professor - Experimental Astrophysics or Astronomical Instrumentation

The Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics (DAA) and the Dunlap Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Toronto together invite applications for a tenure-stream faculty appointment in experimental astrophysics. This is a joint appointment between the Department (51%) and the Dunlap Institute (49%) at the rank of Assistant Professor and will commence on 1 July 2019.

We seek applicants in astronomical instrumentation or experimental astrophysics. The successful candidate is expected to establish and lead an independent, externally funded research program, supervise graduate students, teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and engage in university service activities. Applicants must have earned a PhD in astronomy, astrophysics, or a related field at the time of appointment or shortly after. The selection will be based primarily on the applicant’s excellence in research and teaching. Excellence in research is evidenced primarily by the quality of published papers and other documents submitted for review, as well as strong endorsements from referees of high standing. The successful candidate for this position is expected to pursue innovative research in instrumentation and astrophysics at the highest international level, have a major role in a leading instrumentation project, an established record of publishing articles in the leading academic journals in the field, participation in major international conferences, invited seminars at leading institutions and other noteworthy activities in Astronomy and Astrophysics that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline. Evidence for excellence in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate level is required, such as lecture preparation and delivery, curriculum development, and supervision of research students, as highlighted in a teaching statement.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
