Description

The Department of Linguistics (https://linguistics.ucsc.edu/) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for two positions, one in (a) semantic theory/formal pragmatics, and one in (b) syntactic theory. Both of these positions can be made at either the mid-Associate Professor level (with tenure) or the Assistant Professor level (tenure track).

For position (a), Applicants at the level of Associate Professor should have a demonstrated record of teaching and research in semantic theory or formal pragmatics that will contribute significantly to this area of the Department's research profile and teaching mission. Applicants at the level of Assistant Professor should have the teaching potential and research expertise in semantic theory or formal pragmatics that will enable them to contribute to this area.

For position (b), Applicants at the level of Associate Professor should have a demonstrated record of teaching and research in syntactic theory that will contribute significantly to this area of the Department's research profile and teaching mission. Applicants at the level of Assistant Professor should have the teaching potential and research expertise in syntactic theory that will enable them to contribute to this area.

For both positions, we welcome candidates with additional strengths that complement their areas of primary expertise.

The successful candidates will contribute to existing strengths in the Department but will also add to those strengths in new and substantive ways. They will contribute breadth and depth to the undergraduate and graduate curricula, including the mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students. The successful candidates must be able to work with students, faculty and staff from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. We are especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their research, teaching, and service.

This position carries a five-course equivalency workload, which normally means teaching four courses over three quarters and carrying other academic and service responsibilities.

We welcome candidates who understand the barriers facing women and minorities who are underrepresented in higher education careers (as evidenced by life experiences and educational background), and who have experience in equity and diversity with respect to teaching, mentoring, research, life experiences, or service towards building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment.
