Assistant Professor in Latin American Music

Assistant Professor in Latin American Music

University of California, San Diego

The Department of Music at the University of California San Diego invites applications for an Assistant Professorship (full-time/ tenure-track) to begin July 1, 2019. We seek to hire a music scholar who navigates contemporary research issues and concerns across the Latin American and/or Caribbean region, the U.S.- Mexico Borderlands, or with immigrant Latinx communities, who also has a strong background in Western art music history. A Ph.D. in an academic music field or related discipline is required. ABD candidates will be considered. The successful candidate should have a strong grasp of contemporary musicological issues, a record of excellence in teaching at the university level, and a demonstrated potential for significant scholarship.
A concerted engagement with creative performance practices is also highly valued. She or he will be expected to make a strong contribution to the graduate program in Integrative Studies, including advising MA and PhD students, and to teach in the department's undergraduate music history sequence, potentially re-envisioning its scope.

The successful candidate will complement and extend the strengths of the current faculty, and will feel at home in a department that nourishes musical creativity and innovation. She or he will be expected to perform appropriate departmental and university service, and an ability to foster connections to other departments, programs, and research centers across the campus is also highly desirable. The Department especially seeks candidates who demonstrate strong or potential accomplishments in areas contributing to equity, diversity, and inclusion, and a desire to play a leadership role in advancing UC San Diego's commitment to achieving excellence and diversity.

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on University of California pay scales.

Review of applications will begin October 15, 2018 and will continue until the position is filled.

To apply, candidates should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, an example of scholarly writing, and a personal statement that outlines one's teaching philosophy and past or potential contributions to promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion (see http://facultydiversity.ucsd.edu). Documentation of teaching excellence is also strongly encouraged.
