Associate Director of Comparative Medicine/Clinical Veterinarian

Opportunity:

The Center for Comparative Medicine at the University of Virginia is currently seeking to recruit a highly qualified individual into the role of Associate Director, a non-faculty (University Operational and Professional) position. The Associate Director will work with the Director to initiate and drive strategic vision and operations for the Center.

The University of Virginia is an AAALAC accredited institution located in central Virginia at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Center manages and operates ten vivaria encompassing 98,000 square feet housing an average daily population of approximately 50,000 barrier maintained mice in addition to a variety of other laboratory animal species. The Center operates an animal disease diagnostic and research laboratory, a small BSL3/ABSL3 facility, two large animal surgical operating theaters, and a gnotobiotic rodent program.

Key Priorities:

The Associate Director will have opportunities for leadership and success in many areas, including the following:

• Strategic oversight of the program of veterinary medical and surgical care;
• Supervision of rodent quarantine for importation from non-commercial sources;
• Collaborating with the Director in further development of the animal care and use program as it pertains to policies and procedures associated with animal husbandry and veterinary care; and
• Working directly with the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee by performing pre-review of all new animal care and use protocols.

In addition, the incumbent will participate as a voting member on the Institutional Biosafety Committee, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, and the Occupational Health Subcommittee of the IACUC. Additional duties include participation in a weekend on-call rotation with the other veterinary staff.

Professional Qualifications:

The required competencies for this job should include the following:

• Must be a licensed DVM in at least one state.
• Must be board certified by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine.
• Must have a minimum of five years of experience as a laboratory animal veterinarian preferably in an academic institutional environment.
• Bachelor’s Degree required, Ph.D in relevant fields preferred.
