DEAN–COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

Northern Michigan University invites applications for the position of Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences with an anticipated start date of 1 July 2019.  The Dean serves as the College’s chief administrative officer reporting to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Dean will provide dynamic and visionary leadership for the College of Arts and Sciences which includes one school (Art & Design), fifteen departments (Biology, Chemistry, Communications & Performance Studies, Economics, English, Earth, Environmental & Geographical Sciences, History, Languages, Literatures & International Studies, Mathematics & Computer Science, Music, Philosophy, Physics, Political Science, Psychological Science, Sociology & Anthropology), and three Centers (Center for Economic Education and Entrepreneurship, Center for Native American Studies, Center for Upper Peninsula Studies). The Dean will facilitate cooperative and collaborative relationships within the College and with the University and external communities.  The Dean will ensure that the students receive a high quality education by supporting excellence in teaching, service, and scholarship among faculty.  The Dean will engage directly in external resource attraction and fundraising efforts.  

Required Qualifications: The successful candidate will have an earned doctorate or equivalent terminal degree in a related discipline found within the College of Arts and Sciences; professional accomplishments sufficient to warrant an appointment as a tenured professor in the College; five years of administrative and leadership responsibility in a higher education environment, including evidence of innovative and creative approaches to leadership and administrative responsibilities; experience with budgets, staffing plans, personnel supervision, computer applications and systems, strategic planning, and assessment; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; and ability to work effectively with alumni and potential donors in College fundraising programs.
