The University of Hawai‘i at Hilo (UH Hilo) is committed to being an Indigenous serving institution and fostering a Hawaiian place of learning as part of the University of Hawai‘i system. With an enrollment fluctuating between 3,000 and 4,000 students, UH Hilo offers approximately fifty (50) bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees and over 25 certificates in various fields of study.

The College of Natural and Health Sciences (CNHS) at UH Hilo enrolls approximately 1,000 students, and offers undergraduate degrees and certificates from the following Departments: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geology-Geophysics, Kinesiology and Exercise Science, Marine Science, Mathematics, Physics and Astronomy, and the School of Nursing. In addition, a master’s degree is offered through the Tropical Conservation Biology and Environmental Science Graduate Program and a Doctor of Nursing Practice is offered by the School of Nursing. There are approximately ninety (90) faculty and staff members in the College, with additional lecturers and temporary employees hired throughout the year.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Academic Affairs: Create an environment that fosters positive faculty, staff and student morale, academic vigor, instructional excellence and research productivity. Promote an environment of academic rigor that motivates students, staff and faculty to excel by supporting the creation and dissemination of new knowledge. Develop and maintain excellence in instructional and research programs through the recruitment and retention of high quality faculty and staff. Facilitate the development and adoption of best and promising curricular, instructional delivery and research practices. Ensure academic services are delivered to students effectively and in ways that promote student success. Review and revise academic policies that may improve student retention, progression, and graduation. Solicit and incorporate feedback, input, insight, suggestions, and recommendations from students, faculty and staff to foster student success. Support professional development of faculty and staff. Provide leadership to Department Chairs and faculty in the formulation, implementation and oversight of enrollment management plans within the college and in partnership with other campus units. Review faculty applicant dossiers, interview candidates, and initiate appointment documents. Review application for contract renewal, promotion, tenure, merit, etc. Counsel post-tenure faculty for performance improvement. Assist in developing and administering policies for program assessment, review, and accreditation.

Administrative Affairs: Provide effective leadership, direction and support in implementing the vision, mission, strategic plan, and core commitments of the College. In collaboration with faculty and senior administration, develop, coordinate, and achieve short and long-term goals, objectives, and initiatives consistent with the strategic plans of the College, UH Hilo and UH System. Work with department chairs on budgeting, student and faculty issues, and course scheduling. Ensure effective services to students including advising and registration. Provide sound budgetary administration and leadership in financial planning for the College. Ensure that the College’s administration, operations, and programs reflect the diversity of the College’s stakeholders, cultures and thinking. Provide leadership and management over the College’s field stations, programs and equipment. Provide effective leadership, direction and support for the College’s boating and diving programs, field programs, and analytical laboratories; ensuring compliance with safety protocol and proper equipment.

External Relations and Fund Raising: Initiate and support the development of sustained and strategic academic partnerships and collaborations with the academic, community and businesses institutions. Foster alumni relationships and support by the inclusion of alumni in College events and strategic planning. Coordinate activities with local, state, national and international officials, legislators, and organizations to further promote the College’s reputation and enhance career opportunities for students and alumni. Nurture relationships with potential donors in collaboration with the UH Foundation. Secure appropriate funding from State, Federal, corporate and private resources to strengthen the College’s research programs and teaching program. Encourage and support extramural grant activity by faculty and staff; provide mentorship in grant preparation, submission and management. Promote the sharing of the College’s expertise with the community through the development of credit and non-credit programs to serve the needs of the community and other constituencies identified in the College’s and UH Hilo’s mission statements.

 Minimum Qualification: Earned doctorate in one of the College’s disciplines or a closely related field in science. Attained the rank of full professor or equivalent rank. Five (5) years of progressively responsible administrative experience in academic leadership at the level or department chairperson or higher. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. At least five (5) years of undergraduate teaching at university/college level.

Desirable Qualification: Record of distinguished teaching, scholarship, publication and/or professional activity and achievement; national/international recognition in a scientific field. Record of establishing a successful research program supported by extramural grant awards. Record of successful institutional fundraising. Demonstrated experience implementing student success initiatives. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with multiple constituencies. Demonstrated commitment to diversity and equality; experience working among and with multi-cultural populations. Display evidence of consultative and collaborative leadership. Record of problem solving, decision making, and conflict resolution. Demonstrated experience creating and developing innovative and sustainable programs and initiatives. Experience in conducting program assessments, reviews, and accreditation. Understanding and appreciation of the unique island and Native Hawaiian culture. Familiarity with a unionized environment and/or labor relations.
