EOP Assistant Director/Undergraduate Studies - Educational Opportunity Program

Position Overview 
Reporting directly to the EOP Director, the EOP Assistant Director is responsible for working collaboratively with the EOP Director in assessing prospective and current EOP student needs and developing program initiatives to promote student success. The incumbent will work closely with the EOP Director to develop practices to enhance access for and the retention of underrepresented populations.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities 

  • Represents EOP on campus-wide and local community organizations and boards; assist with strategic planning, policy formulation and employee relations; prepares ad hoc and annual reports.
  • Hiring selection committees; providing training of new team members; seeking out and assisting in securing external funding; developing and implementing campaigns to promote student success and monitoring EOP students' academic progress.
  • Supervises the activities and responsibilities of the Summer Bridge Coordinator, Admissions Coordinator, Renaissance Scholars Coordinator, Student Development Coordinators and counseling component of EOP and oversees the support services area of EOP and the support services Administrative Analyst.
  • Identifies where automation and/or new technology can be applied to improve the organization's efficiency and outcomes. 
  • Collaborates with staff to analyze office practices and recommend policy or procedural changes. 
  • Oversees the quarterly disqualification process by assessing student grade reports and providing recommendations to EOP Director on students' academic standing.
  • Reviews employee requests for leave, ensuring adequate coverage for essential functions within the organization. 
  • Supervises preparation of monthly/annual reports and other periodic fiscal reports for the Renaissance Scholars Program upon request, to ensure accuracy and timeliness of reports. 
  • Identifies cost saving measures.
  • Oversees selection of annual scholarship recipients.
  • Provides presentations to a number of on and off campus constituents.
  • Responsible for assessing students' needs and utilizing the appropriate advising/counseling strategies on a case-by-case basis.
  • Assists students with how to navigate the re-entry process and with interpretation of articulation agreements.
  • Facilitates weekly staff meetings.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in  higher education, counseling or a related field required from a regionally accredited university.
  • Five or more years of related experience of progressive responsibility, including supervisory/managerial experience.
  • Strong history of program development, supervision and evaluation in student services programs.
  • The ability to enhance and develop new initiatives independently and demonstrated effectiveness in overseeing academic support and retention services for low-income, underrepresented college students; excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of critical issues impacting higher education, deep commitment to educational equity and student success, the ability to handle multiple assignments, manage time effectively, work independently and as part of a team.
  • Applicants must have knowledge of and strict adherence to one of the nationally recognized counselor code of ethics/ethical standards, such as the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), American Counseling Association (ACA), or the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) and the Core Values of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA).
  • Ability to analyze complex issues, manage multiple priorities, and respond proactively in addressing student academic and personal issues.
  • Knowledge in how to operate standard office equipment and software including PeopleSoft, Microsoft Office (Access, PowerPoint, Excel and Word) and database management.
  • Applicants must have the ability to write clear and concise reports, along with the ability to troubleshoot problems; the ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with diverse constituencies.
  • Incumbent will need to be able to handle sensitive and confidential information with diplomacy and discretion.

  • Knowledge of Free Application for Federal Student Aid and California Student Aid Commission Programs (i.e. CA Dream Act Application, Chafee Grant, Cal Grant)
  • Ability to work well under pressure, ambiguity and conflicting goals
  • Ability to interpret and communicate policies and procedures
  • Ability to carry out assignments without detailed instructions
  • Ability to develop annual plans and detailed timelines
  • Ability to produce accurate and timely correspondence and reports by researching, gathering, analyzing, and formatting information as requested

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree from a four-year accredited college or university in Higher Education, School Counseling, Social Work, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of professional counseling theories and techniques is preferred.
  • Experience in collecting, analyzing and evaluating data, as well as making verbal and written presentations regarding their assessment of the data collected.
  • Experience with EOP, or other student equity programs.
  • Experience with higher education and familiarity with CSU academic policies and procedures. 
  • Upper division or graduate course work in individual and group counseling, career counseling and conflict resolution.
  • Experience in fundraising, event planning, training is preferred as these are considered specialized skills.
  • Working knowledge or experience in relaying university degree requirements including major and general education coursework and developing educational plans.
  • Experience supervising employees within a collective bargaining environment.
  • Experience working with at least two of the following areas: programs serving low-income, educationally disadvantaged and historically underrepresented students, summer transitional programs, academic support services, assessment or counseling.
