Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Strategic Communication: Digital Advertising

Northern Arizona University is seeking a teacher-scholar with a commitment to impactful research to join its academic community and support its mission to transform lives and enrich communities through high-quality academics and impactful scholarship, creative endeavors, and public service. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated research and teaching expertise in advertising or paid media. Integrated marketing, content marketing, social media and internal communications experience is beneficial, as well as understanding of the Hispanic/Latine audience. The position requires a Ph.D. (or ABD considered) in Communication or related discipline with potential for a robust research agenda, collaborative research and successful scholarly grant initiation, development and submission.

Job Description

Candidates should have strong training and experience in digital advertising and strategic communication that includes one or more of these areas: programmatic advertising and behavioral targeting; artificial intelligence, machine-learning, big data and advertising; social media advertising; computational research approach to data analysis; human-computer interaction research on artificial intelligence advertising; or mobile consumer research, user experience, augmented reality and virtual reality. The ideal candidate would also be familiar with using data-driven advertising and strategic communication for social justice and equity.

The successful candidate should have a Ph.D. in a related field by August 23, 2023, the start date at Northern Arizona University; significant academic and professional experience in digital advertising, strategic communication, or media-related data/metrics; and the potential to be an outstanding teacher and productive scholar. Research agenda should include a focus on digital advertising focused on the Hispanic/Latine community.

Preference will be awarded to candidates with professional experience in digital advertising with a focus on the Latine/Hispanic communities. Professional experience and/or a research agenda focused on political advertising is also preferred.

This new faculty member will teach and refine courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels related to advertising, including: STR 373 New Media Engagement, STR 446/546 Social Media Analytics & Management and ADV 310 Advertising Media Selection along with developing courses in such areas as: Programmatic Media, Artificial Intelligence Advertising, Mobile Advertising, Advertising/Public Relations Research and Analytics, Big Data Research and Applications for Advertising and Influencer Outreach.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Ph.D. in Communication or related discipline (including advertising, public relations, social media, marketing, content marketing or other related area). An ABD will be considered with evidence of the degree to be conferred by August 2023.

2. Evidence of college or university level teaching experience (minimum 1 year), including teaching and course design.

3. Research agenda that includes the study of strategic communication and digital advertising focused on Hispanic/Latine audiences.

4.Evidence of commitment to diversity: scholarship and experience focused on issues of diversity or diverse populations; working with diverse populations on campus and in the community.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Record of scholarly publications and/or presentations in competitive, peer-reviewed journals or academic conferences.

2. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues on research, teaching, and/or department programs.

3. Evidence of success in securing external research funding and/or proposed ideas for pursuing funding opportunities.

4. Evidence of teaching and student-related responsibilities, which could be indicated by mentorship experience, student course evaluations, annual reviews, sample syllabi, peer reviews, awards/recognition, etc.

5. At least 2 years professional experience related to strategic communication (advertising, public relations, social media, marketing, content marketing or other related area) that includes a focus on Hispanic/Latine audiences.

6. Evidence of research or professional experience with political advertising and strategic communication in the digital environment.

7. Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a diverse university community, including Hispanic/Latine cultures.

Background Information

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. This is a Faculty (FAC) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); sick leave accruals and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment. If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of employment. The long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of the pay period following 90 days of employment.
