The Department of Religion in the College of Arts and Sciences at Syracuse University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in Hinduism to begin August 2023.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in religion or a related field, with specialization in the everyday life of Hindus and competency in methods and theories of religious studies. The successful candidate should also have a foundational grasp of Hindu textual and philosophical traditions and the ability to teach courses in Hinduism across pre-modern and modern periods. Disciplinary specialty is open, as is expertise in a geographic area and/or historical period, but the successful candidate is expected to have relevant competencies in regional languages and will preferably be proficient in Sanskrit.

The successful candidate will make significant contributions to the Department of Religion’s undergraduate and graduate curricula. At the undergraduate level, the successful candidate will teach introductory and advanced courses in Hinduism as well as thematic courses in the study of religion. At the graduate level, the successful candidate will teach topical and methodological seminars with appeal across graduate student specialties as well as advanced seminars in Hindu traditions. The successful candidate’s graduate seminars will fit into 1 or more of the Department of Religion’s 3 graduate concentrations: Critique, Image and Politics; Communities and Identities; and Texts and Contexts. In addition, the successful candidate could contribute to and benefit from our nationally recognized South Asia Center and from affiliated faculty in our CNY Humanities Corridor, which includes Cornell University and the University of Rochester.

Information about the Department of Religion, its programs, and its graduate concentrations is posted on our website: http://religion.syr.edu. The Department of Religion is committed to a diversified faculty and especially encourages persons from groups underrepresented in the American academy to apply. The successful candidate will be committed to working effectively with students, faculty, and staff across a wide range of backgrounds.

The review of applications will begin October 7, 2022.
