Job Description Summary
Reporting to the Director of the Traumatic Brain Injury Clinical Research within the Department of Neurology, the Associate Director will play an integral role in the successful development, implementation, and advancement of the programmatic initiatives of the Traumatic Brain Injury Clinical Research Initiative and directing Penn's NeuroNext projects. The Associate Director will be instrumental in enhancing and evolving the center's clinical research activities, including overseeing on all aspects of project development and implementation for the 4 principal investigators of the center. The Associate Director will oversee clinical research coordinators, research assistants, and students to ensure appropriate onboarding, ongoing study-specific training, and data collection and integrity. The Associate Director will work closely will collaborating sites and the Neurology grants/businesses offices. to facilitate successful launch of multi-institutional studies, including those for which Penn serves as the IRB of record.

This position will be responsible for:
  • Defining center goals, articulating priorities and setting standards to identify opportunities for implementing major as well as subsidiary goals, to direct their realization, and to overcome impediments to their achievement.
  • Working with center and department leadership to ensure that the appropriate infrastructure and quality systems are in place to support TBI research trials
  • Overseeing a staff of 6-8 clinical research coordinators, research assistants, and students to ensure appropriate training on research protocols, adherence to regulatory guidance, successful implementation of study protocols, and support of study participants. Ensure the conduct of clinical studies in conformance with Good Clinical Practices (GCP), International Conference of Harmonization (ICH) Guidelines, and Penn Standard Operating Procedures. This position serves as a senior administrative liaison between investigators, clinical research projects and clinical research support staff.
  • Collaborating with principal investigators to develop fundable ideas, create budgets, write and submit proposals.
  • Anticipating timelines, analyzing requirements to accomplish major and minor projects, organizing and delegating tasks to center staff, follow through to completion of a broad range of complex projects conducted with collaborators both internal and external to Penn.
  • Leading and overseeing the post-award management of the group's multi-million dollar portfolio of research grants awarded by the federal government, private foundations, internal Penn sources, clinical partners and others, and management of grants from Principal Investigators to create a consolidated budget enabling growth of the group's research infrastructure and ensuring all salaries and expenses are allocated appropriately.
  • Developing recruitment strategies. Screening and interviewing candidates for staff openings. Interviewing references, making hiring recommendations, and onboarding new hires.
  • Strategic communications and collaborations including development and oversight of the group's website(s) and institutional relationships between the center and internal/external research partners around the world.
  • Overseeing grant applications and interacting with funding administrators and the University Business Office.
  • Proficient in EPIC, Penn Financial Systems (BEN Financials, BusinessObjects), Microsoft Office

    Bachelor's Degree with 5-7 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
