Job Description Summary
Reporting directly to the Penn Live Arts (PLA) Executive & Artistic Director, this individual provides strategic leadership, program direction, and operational oversight for PLA's education and engagement activities and will build the initial scope and plan for PLA's new student career support initiative. The Director of Education and Engagement oversees PLA's inclusive community outreach, K-12 education, and engagement efforts, and directs the Assistant Director of Education & Engagement in work focused on Penn curricular integration, community school outreach, and children's & family programming. Youth and student-facing programs include the PLA Director's Student Advisory Council, Student Discovery series, Philadelphia Children's Festival, and our free or low-cost educational events, serving 10,000 youth annually.

The Director of Education and Engagement will initially focus on building the career support initiative to create the first cohort of Penn student internships in 2022-2023. This program will then expand to future funding awards, and the Director will develop a five-year program plan for gradually expanding student career support in the fields of arts, culture, and entertainment. This individual will also focus on collaborating to define program objectives in support of K-12 education and community engagement. In addition, the Director will develop plans for furthering University-based engagement programs that support arts curriculum in-line with PLA's artist residencies and visiting artist programs. These programs represent PLA's efforts to further engage with the university while also maintaining inclusive community connection and positioning PLA for deeper impact on and off campus. Intrinsic to PLA's education and engagement efforts is broad inclusivity and support of dynamic programs that engage the Penn community and Philadelphians from all backgrounds. Program development will focus on further engagement with our West Philadelphia community and will support first-generation and a diverse student body interested in developing careers in the arts, culture, and entertainment fields.

Job Description

Duties:

More specifically, the Director of Education and Engagement will:
  • Build on the initial research and discovery to develop and implement a multi-year program plan for student career support encompassing internship funding, funding awards, an apprenticeship program for college-level students and an eventual PLA fellowship program in arts, culture, and entertainment.
  • As part of PLA's next institutional strategic plan, develop an overall education and engagement approach, leveraging PLA's long history of working with West Philadelphia's constituents and commitment to performance programming for youth in the wider metropolitan region.
  • Oversee implementation of student programs and the annual implementation of the Philadelphia Children's Festival and youth and family programming. Achieve annual student engagement targets both at Penn and within the wider community.
  • Direct the annual program of PLA Insights events including pre/post-show discussions, masterclasses, talks, and workshops in conjunction with performance programming.
  • Create, manage, and help implement curricular-support programs with PLA artist residencies and Penn's academic units.
  • Build partnerships at Penn and in the Philadelphia community, bringing a deeply collaborative and positive attitude to PLA's stakeholder and constituent relationships.
  • Manage one full-time staff member, student interns, and work-study team members while building the initial department budget and annual work plans.
  • Manage departmental budget, expense forecasting, and reporting while working closely with the Development department on funding opportunities.
  • Work closely with production and operations staff to develop project scoping and implementation plans for all educational events including budgeting and appropriate staffing.
  • Provide guidance and expertise on best practices in arts education program development and implementation.


Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree, with a concentration in performing arts and/or extensive experience in performing arts and education/community program development. 5-7 years of demonstrated experience in administering an arts education program, cultural/community development program, or student services work in the context of a performing arts or other arts organization. Proven experience in successfully working with communities of culturally and artistically diverse backgrounds. Experience in and knowledge of the Higher Education system; proven experience in working with faculty, students, and administrators in developing projects and programs. Experience in production of on-stage events and artist logistics, planning and support. Experience in supervising staff, interns, and volunteers. Excellent communications and digital technology skills including writing and editing skills. Project oriented with the ability to multi-task and manage complex projects and multiple stakeholders. Ability to work weekend and evening hours, and to travel as needed . An advocate for the performing arts and arts education, with a demonstrated passion for and knowledge of a broad range of performing arts practice across genres. A collaborator, team player, and enthusiastic partner in advancing an ambitious arts agenda for multiple stakeholders.
