Job Description Summary
Reporting to the Systems and Metadata Librarian in Resource Management and Access Services, the Temporary Metadata Librarian (3-year position) will create original catalog records for English, French, and German materials in accordance with established standards and institutional policy. Additionally, the incumbent will perform collection maintenance and resource processing.

Reporting to the Systems and Metadata Librarian in Resource Management and Access Services, the Temporary Metadata Librarian (3-year position) will create original catalog records for English, French, and German materials in accordance with established standards and institutional policy. Additionally, the incumbent will perform collection maintenance and resource processing.

Job Description

Responsibilities Include:
  • In accordance with cataloging standards/rules and local practice, perform original and copy cataloging.
  • Perform routine and advanced searches of Biddle and Penn Libraries catalogs (Search CENTER, WMS, Franklin), external bibliographic utilities (e.g. OCLC, peer institution catalogs), and online marketplaces/publisher websites (e.g. Amazon, GOBI, Harrassowitz) for bibliographic information.
  • Process physical inventory, including unboxing materials (with occasional lifting of boxes), barcoding of library items, and transporting book trucks through Biddle Law Library spaces.
  • Perform collection maintenance (e.g. withdrawing, transferring, reclassing materials).
  • Serve on library-wide committees (e.g., collections working groups, strategic planning).
  • Liaise with vendors to troubleshoot issues.
  • Keep statistics and analytics for departmental activities (e.g., collections, materials budget).
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:

Required:
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, including ability to pay attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize duties.
  • Strong computer skills in a Windows computing environment.
  • Master's degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS), or equivalent, from an ALA accredited institution.


Preferred:
  • Experience with library work, preferably in cataloging monographs and serials.
  • Knowledge of Library of Congress Classification System.
  • Knowledge of Library of Congress Subject Headings and other controlled vocabularies.
  • Knowledge of current metadata standards.
  • Knowledge of preservation and conservation techniques for books and other printed materials.
