Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Statistics

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Southern Maine invites applications for a tenure-track Data Science/Statistics position at the Assistant Professor level to begin on September 1, 2018.   While all areas of Statistics will be considered, preference will be given to candidates whose teaching experience and/or course work may include, but are not limited to, Data Science, Predictive Modeling with Big Data, Statistical Data Mining & Machine Learning. Expected duties include graduate and undergraduate teaching, sustained research, supervision of graduate students, university, college, department, and community service.  There are opportunities to establish research collaborations with regional institutions, and researchers at USM who seek help with statistical issues.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers a comprehensive program in Mathematical Sciences including a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics with concentrations in pure math, applied math/operations research and statistics, and a Master’s of Science degree in Statistics with tracks in Data Science, Applied Statistics, Operations Research/ Applied Mathematics and Biostatistics. The department also offers certificates in Data Science, Statistics, and Actuarial Science. th among others. Students have opportunities for enhanced practical experience through independent research projects, and internships. Faculty members are engaged actively in research in Statistics, Operations Research, Mathematics, and Mathematics Education.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Terminal degree (Ph.D.) by time of appointment
  • Readiness to pursue research and scholarship
  • Ability to teach courses in Data Science/Statistics

Preferred:   

  • Evidence of commitment to student centered learning, research in data science, and teaching excellence.
