Appointment: Assistant Professor Tenure Track
Effective: September 2018
Area of Specialization: Creative Writing/Digital Media

The English Department at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) announces a tenure-track Assistant Professor position that begins September 2018.  We seek a specialist in creative writing (fiction and/or creative nonfiction) with particular expertise in new media and digital production.  The successful candidate will have an interest in collaborative and interdisciplinary projects and will help us further develop our offerings in experimental, flexible and performative approaches to genre.  We also welcome applicants who examine inter-relationships among aesthetics, emerging technologies and social justice.

Nestled in the foothills of the San Bernardino mountains, CSUSB (an Hispanic Service Institution) is located in San Bernardino in the Inland Empire region of Southern California, 60 miles east of Los Angeles.  CSUSB offers programs through the Colleges of Arts and Letters, Business and Public Administration, Education, Natural Sciences and Social and Behavioral Sciences, and operates a satellite campus in Palm Desert located in Coachella Valley.  CSUSB serves approximately 20,700 students and offers 47 undergraduate and 35 graduate degrees, including one doctoral degree, as well as 13 programs with national accreditation. The Department offers a B.A. in English with multiple tracks, including a large creative writing track; a minor in English; an M.A. in English Composition with three concentrations (composition, literature, and applied linguistics & TESL); and certificates in professional writing, teaching writing, creative writing, and TESL.

CSUSB actively encourages applications from qualified candidates who demonstrate a commitment to serving a diverse student population and advancing student success through highly engaging, high impact educational practices.  We are particularly interested in receiving applications from members of historically underrepresented groups and women.

Typical Activities

The successful candidate will teach and develop a variety of creative writing and literature courses. The normal teaching load is three courses per quarter, or nine courses per academic year. Beginning in Fall 2020, CSUSB will operate on a semester schedule; the anticipated semester teaching load is four courses per semester.

Minimum Qualifications

Requirements include a Ph.D or M.F.A. in Creative Writing or related field at the time of appointment, evidence of promise in professional activities, a record of excellence in teaching, and a commitment to service to the University and larger community.   We especially welcome candidates committed to the success of first-generation college students from diverse backgrounds.

Supplemental Information

Candidates should submit the following materials: a letter of application, CV, creative work sample, statement of teaching philosophy, contact information for three references, copies of all post-secondary transcripts (official transcripts will be required prior to appointment), and a diversity statement; the diversity statement may include your interpretation of diversity, inclusion and gender equity, and must include specific examples of how your educational and/or professional experiences, background, and philosophy have prepared you for this role at CSUSB (maximum 250 words). In addition, three referees should email their confidential letters of recommendation directly to facultyrecruitment@csusb.edu. All application materials must be received by October 16, 2017.  Formal review of applications will begin in October 2017 and continue until the position is filled.  For reasons of equity and access, we will be conducting first-round interviews via video conferences rather than at the MLA Convention. If you have any questions, please contact Professor David Carlson, Chair of the English Department, at dajcarls@csusb.edu.
