DEAN

COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

Washington State University, one of the nation’s leading land grant institutions, announces a nationwide search for a new Dean of Arts and Sciences

Washington State University conducts transformational research and provides world-class education to more than 30,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Founded in 1890 in Pullman, Washington State is one of only 96 public and private institutions recognized by the Carnegie Foundation as a “very high research activity” university.  In addition to the Pullman campus, WSU has campuses in Spokane, the Tri-Cities, and Vancouver, and a developing campus in Everett; four research and extension centers within the state and extension offices in every county; and a Global Campus with online degree programs accessible worldwide. The University’s annual operating budget expenditures are nearly $1 billion.

The Colleges of Arts and Sciences (CAS) represents the educational heart of the university, and offers degrees at the baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral levels. In addition to its Pullman location, the College operates at each of the University’s campuses in Vancouver, Spokane, Tri-Cities and Everett, as well as online programs through WSU’s Global Campus.

As a research, scholarly, and creative enterprise, the College includes more than 550 faculty who, with the aid of staff, provide more than 50% of the educational instruction for the five-campus WSU system. Across its 12 departments, 4 schools, and 3 programs, the College offers more than two dozen undergraduate degrees with more than 70 specialization options, as well as more than 40 Master’s and Doctoral degrees. Additional information about the College can be found at cas.wsu.edu.

It is expected that strong candidates for the position will have demonstrated an ability to lead and manage a complex academic organization and will possess an outstanding record as an accomplished scholar and educator who merits tenure at the rank of full professor.  The Dean is expected to be a champion of both teaching and research and be devoted to excellence and shared governance.  The next Dean should be a collaborator who possesses exemplary interpersonal and communication skills; impeccable integrity; a collegial and consultative demeanor; a team orientation; an astute understanding of finances; a student-centered approach to academic leadership; and the ability to acquire resources from private and public sources.

While applications and nominations will be accepted until a new Dean is selected, interested parties are encouraged to submit their materials to our consultant at the address below by December 1 to assure optimal consideration.
