Job Description Summary
The Gene Therapy Program (GTP) is entering a new era of unprecedented opportunity with the great potential to reshape the face of medicine as we know it. Our discoveries have set the stage for successful treatments and possibly even cures for devastating genetic diseases.

The laboratory of Dr. Jim Wilson, at GTP of the University of Pennsylvania, has been a leader in the development of innovative vector technology for close to three decades. We have emerged as the go-to organization for public and private partners, who want to participate in the gene therapy space. Currently, we are positioned to lead another round of vector innovation and establish pre-clinical and clinical proof-of-concept in therapeutic applications of in-vivo genome editing.

Continuation of all GTP positions is contingent upon funding.

Job Description

Our Program for Comparative Medicine is looking for a Senior Veterinarian Technician (SVT) for our rodent and large animal research team to ensure the humane care and treatment of laboratory animals. You will support research operations across two GTP-managed animal facilities and manage up to two technicians supporting clinical care and research.

As a SVT you will support GTP's Veterinarian for rodents by performing routine and specialized procedures associated with the veterinary care of laboratory animals. You will participate in both scheduled research and nonclinical projects, reviewing research and nonclinical study protocols, performing specialized experimental procedures,and ensuring that samples are delivered to the appropriate person(s) or diagnostic laboratory(ies) for GTP as it pertains to the study protocol. You will triage clinical cases; participate in clinical rounds on active cases under the directive of the clinical research veterinarian; manage GTP's monthly rodent health surveillance program at two animal facilities; and administer and document the appropriate clinical therapies to animals undergoing veterinary directed treatments. You will help to maintain an inventory of veterinary supplies and equipment including controlled drugs. Also you will ensure all animal activities are in compliance with USDA, OLAW, GLP and AAALAC regulations/guidelines. You will assist with monthly billing of all clinical and experimental procedures.

Employees in this position will participate in an occupational safety and health program which requires tuberculin testing and potentially immunization. Weekend work, holiday work and overtime hours are a requirement of this position. May be designated as essential personnel during a storm/natural disaster. Responsibilities must be performed with minimal instruction and persons will be expected to independently perform duties as described.
