Special Information

The Northern Arizona University Department of Social Work and Yuma Branch Campus Bachelor of Social Work Program is conducting a national search to fill a non-tenure track, academic year full time faculty position in Social Work at the rank of Assistant Clinical Professor to be located in Yuma, Arizona.

The Northern Arizona University Social Work Department offers CSWE-accredited BSW and MSW degree programs, with program options on the NAU Yuma Branch Campus, Flagstaff Mountain Campus, and Online Campus. We employ a cohort model and are committed to utilizing technology and service learning as principles to support our teaching in Social Work. The successful candidate will actively collaborate with the Yuma BSW Site Coordinator, Department of Social Work Field Director, academic advising staff, the Social Work Department Chair, and other department faculty/staff on both the Yuma Branch Campus and the Flagstaff Mountain Campus. This is a nine (9) month position, with Field Coordination responsibilities for the Yuma Branch Campus BSW option, teaching three (3) social work courses per semester, student mentoring, and program service activities, including committees, curriculum development, and program planning. This position is teaching focused, non-tenure eligible, at the rank of Assistant Clinical Professor. The position is expected to be continuing, with potential for promotion. Renewal is contingent on performance, continued funding and department needs.

The Yuma Branch Campus of Northern Arizona University is located on the grounds of Arizona Western College, the local community college, in Yuma, AZ. The branch campus serves a vital and growing local and regional community. The campus is about 17 miles from the Mexican border and the State of Sonora.

The Yuma NAU Bachelor of Social Work program option has a unique focus on U.S.-Mexico border issues and populations. The program is offered to a very diverse student population primarily through face-to-face delivery. Several other social science related programs support the Social Work BSW program. All faculty members are expected to promote student learning and help students achieve academic outcomes. NAU-Yuma provides opportunities to work with faculty and students in established partnerships with U.S. community colleges and Mexican universities in Baja Norte and Sonora, Mexico.

Job Description

The primary focus of this position is teaching upper division social work courses for the Bachelor of Social Work program and coordination of the Field Education component of the NAU-Yuma social work program site. A demonstrated connectedness to the discipline of Social Work is expected. The program prepares students to provide professional service to diverse individuals, groups and communities. This faculty member will report through the Department of Social Work on the Flagstaff Mountain Campus, but will serve as an engaged and collaborative colleague to the Arts and Sciences Division on the Yuma Branch Campus and the NAU-Yuma community. The faculty member is expected to serve as a student mentor in their local area. The position requires teaching, service, and professional development activities. Courses will include fieldwork, courses in the successful applicant's area of interest and courses that fit departmental needs. A successful annual review is dependent on a demonstrated connectedness to the profession, positive teaching reviews and departmental/university service. The faculty member is expected to serve on department, university and campus committees and assist with program development. The successful candidate will serve as a resource to academic advisors and recruiters. Summer teaching is available for additional compensation.

Field Education responsibilities include:
  • Provide support and training to Field Instructors and Field Liaisons;
  • Collaborate with enrolled NAU-Yuma students to locate potential field education sites in student's community;
  • Pre-screen potential field education sites prior to placement of student to ensure compliance with CSWE EPAS for field education;
  • Pre-screen students prior to placement with field education agency and preparedness for internship;
  • Implement field education policies and procedures;
  • Complete field placement process with students in approved agency;
  • Engage in systematic evaluation activities specific to field education;
  • Assist in preparing reports needed for CSWE;
  • Provide support for field symposiums and other special events, as needed;
  • Assist the Director of Field Education with updates to the Field Education manual related to the Yuma program option;
  • Collaborate with the Field Director and Field Education team in development of field education policies, procedures, plans, and curriculum.


Minimum Qualifications

  • An earned Master of Social Work degree from a CSWE-accredited program
  • Two years of post-MSW practice experience
  • Experience with program administration and/or development


Preferred Qualifications

  • An earned Ph.D. in Social Work or closely related field from an accredited institution
  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker
  • Three or more years of post-MSW practice experience
  • Knowledge of online technologies demonstrated by prior use/experience
  • The equivalent of two or more years of college or university teaching
  • Demonstrated ability to teach social work courses across the curriculum
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and teach fieldwork placement courses
  • Demonstrated commitment to working in a diverse faculty, staff and student environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching and working with first-generation minority students
  • Demonstrated experience teaching remote courses to augment face-to-face teaching
  • Proficiency in elementary Spanish language

This is a Faculty (FAC) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); sick leave accruals and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment. If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of employment. The long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of the pay period following 90 days of employment.
