The Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) School of Medicine invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB). It is a broadly based department with faculty research in chromosomal dynamics; cancer susceptibility; protein science, including structure, folding, dynamics, modification, and aging; signaling and cell-cell communication; metabolism; and virus-host interactions; the development of technology that enables such research; as well as other areas. The Department, along with the School of Medicine’s 25 other basic science and clinical departments, and its numerous centers and institutes, are awarded well over $220 million in research funding annually.

The next Chair of BMB will take over during a period of remarkable success at OHSU and significant investment in the basic sciences. Ranked as one of the nation’s top 25 biomedical research institutions, OHSU is a thriving academic health center that has grown steadily in the last decade. Since 2005, the University’s operating budget doubled to $2.4 billion, research award dollars grew by $100 million to $376 million, and philanthropic gifts increased more than five fold to $300 million. The Chair will have the opportunity to lead in this environment rich with big ideas, exceptional faculty and students, collaborative opportunities, and resources including world-class research centers, cores, and imaging equipment. S/he will be a leader in OHSU’s basic science community, and play a key role in defining and shaping a vision for BMB while contributing to the development of a University-wide strategic plan for basic science research.

Reporting to the Dean of the School of Medicine, the Chair will plan, lead, organize, and direct the academic, research, and business affairs of the Department. OHSU will consider any outstanding PhD, MD, or MD/PhD scientist with a thriving research program in an area relevant to the broad field of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and a strong commitment to the education of doctoral students. S/he will think innovatively about science, and will support and bolster existing strengths in structural biology and related areas. The successful candidate will have exceptional leadership qualities along with the vision to integrate and inspire diverse faculty around a common purpose.
