Vice President, Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty

Hamilton College

Vice President, Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty

Clinton, New York

Hamilton College, a pre-eminent co-educational, residential, liberal arts college of approximately 1,850 students located in the village of Clinton, New York, seeks a strategic and collaborative Vice President, Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty (VPAA). Reporting directly to the president, the VPAA serves as the chief academic officer and as the primary voice of the faculty on the president’s senior leadership team. The VPAA is charged with supporting faculty scholarship and development, promoting excellent teaching in the classroom, enhancing curricular innovation, infusing diversity and inclusion across campus, and fostering Hamilton’s intellectual community. This distinctive opportunity demands visionary leadership, an ability to create a cohesive campus community, and an uncommon ability to build consensus across different perspectives.

It is an exciting moment for Hamilton, as David Wippman became the College’s 20th president in July 2016. In the past year under President Wippman’s leadership the College has welcomed fresh perspectives and made strides in its continuous pursuit of an innovative and integrated liberal arts education while retaining the core of a Hamilton experience. As a result of retirements, President Wippman has been in a position to recruit key leaders to his senior staff who will complement both him and the collaborative and talented team already in place. In the first half of 2017, the campus community, under his leadership, has undertaken a strategic planning process to define the College’s goals and outline a plan to achieve them. As the leader of the academic affairs division, the VPAA will contribute to the final stages of the plan’s development and its implementation as it relates to the academic experience and will work closely with President Wippman and other senior staff on broader issues across campus.

Hamilton seeks an inspiring leader and respected academic who will champion teaching and scholarly excellence by supporting, leading, and advocating for faculty, and serving as a trusted partner to the president, trustees, and other members of the senior leadership team. The VPAA will be able to articulate an integrated vision for a uniquely Hamilton liberal arts education and experience, and bring a history of successful collaboration across academic boundaries and a demonstrated record of ethical and innovative leadership. Experience in faculty development, data-driven decision making, and a proven track record of leadership in developing and implementing academic policies, programs, and scholarly activities are necessary, as is a financial acumen and a demonstrated commitment to inclusion.

To conduct this search, President Wippman has named a ten-member search committee that includes faculty and senior administrators. The committee is assisted by the executive search firm Isaacson, Miller. Inquiries, nominations, and applications, which will remain confidential, should be directed to www.imsearch.com/6271.

Hamilton College is an Affirmative Action, Equal Opportunity employer and encourages diversity in all areas of the campus community.
