Director, Student and Advising Services - (STA001369)

Description 

The Director, Student and Advising Services is responsible for ensuring that all students who declare a Business major receive advising services. The Director works closely with the College leadership to formulate policies and practices that address the advising needs of all Business students, and that maintain the University's full compliance with all university, state, and federal academic policies and regulations affecting students. The Director will assist in the development of strategies to reaffirm accreditation of AACSB-International. The Director will develop and maintain coordination with Advancement to encourage continuing correspondence with COB alumni.

DUTIES

  • Manages the Advising Office; manages and maintains applicable budgets within the department
  • Reviews records of new admittance's to the BBA program. 
  • Drafts academic plans for students filing for BBA and related correspondence 
  • Reviews applications for graduation candidacy and works with the Registrars' Office to manage and maintain accurate advising records and certification of degrees
  • Evaluates transfers and foreign credits for business courses 
  • Establishes and maintains electronic records for students in the student information system 
  • Enforces academic standards established in the University Catalog
  • Maintains collaboration with various departments and colleges within the University
  • Serves as student advocate on matters relating to advising and academic concerns, as well as Financial Aid and Scholarships and assists with selection of scholarship recipients 
  • Determines annual membership lists such as Beta Gamma Sigma, and Phi Kappa Phi
  • Serves on committees, councils, and task forces as assigned to represent student and administration interests related to Davies College of Business, UH-Downtown and UH-System



MARGINAL DUTIES

  • Provides qualitative and quantitative assessments of the overall effectiveness of the advising and student services 
  • Manages and maintains accurate advising and retention records
  • Attends functions as liaison for the College
  • Maintains an appropriate level of professional activity through membership and participation in relevant professional organizations
  • Performs all other duties as assigned

Direct Reports: Full Time Employees

Delegation of Work: Regularly assigns work to subordinate(s)

Supervision Given: Makes final decision on evaluating employee performance; hiring new employees; disciplinary actions; makes final decision on scheduling employee work hours; makes final decision on coaching and counseling; training; provides recommendations on handling employee grievances and complaints; and makes final decision on granting time off

  1. Knowledge of working with a business school and university policies and procedures desirable

WORK LOCATION AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Primary Work Location: Works in an office environment

Physical Demands: Work is normally performed in a typical interior work environment which does not subject the employee to any unpleasant elements. Position is physically comfortable; individual has discretion about sitting, walking, standing, etc. Must be able to speak, hear and see. 

 

Work environment involves minimal exposure to physical risks
