THE SEARCH

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), one of the world’s premier institutions focused exclusively on health, invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the School of Dentistry. An established global leader in oral health research, education and patient care, the School of Dentistry consistently attracts high quality students and faculty.

The next Dean of the School of Dentistry will lead one of the most distinguished schools of dentistry in the country.  Uniquely, the Dean will oversee the integration of clinical services into a coordinated UCSF Dental Center, the first of its kind in a dental school. The faculty and staff of the School of Dentistry are committed to advancing oral and craniofacial health through discovery and providing excellent, integrated patient-centered care. The school is deeply committed to preparing the next generation of clinicians and scientists to improve patient care within a rapidly evolving national health care system.

UCSF is dedicated to advancing health worldwide through cutting-edge biomedical research, top-ranked graduate education in the life sciences and health professions, and excellence in patient care.  UCSF is known for a culture of collaboration as scientists, clinicians, educators and students work together to translate new discoveries into treatments that have led to life-saving therapies and cures for patients and populations. UCSF is first among public institutions nationwide in research support from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), garnering a total of $577 million in contracts and grants in 2016. All four of its professional schools — the School of Dentistry, School of Medicine, School of Nursing and School of Pharmacy — rank in the top three in NIH funding in their respective fields. Additionally, the School of Dentistry and the programs within the Graduate Division consistently rank among the top in the nation.

Reporting to the Chancellor, the Dean will advance the School of Dentistry’s scholarship excellence, outstanding education, clinical programs and public service. Specific challenges for the Dean are addressing student debt and improving administrative efficiencies across its operations.

To that end, the Dean will work with faculty, staff, students and other stakeholders to implement and enhance the current strategic plan that supports the recently formed Dental Center, an integrated clinical enterprise that streamlines patient access and care; reinforces an innovative curriculum that continues to attract top students and takes advantage of technological advances in dentistry; promotes interdisciplinary research; provides opportunities and support for clinical training and practice; supports the rapid translation of research to groundbreaking treatments; and implements continuous process improvement to reduce costs. The current funding landscape at the state and federal level will require the Dean to expand and diversify revenue sources, including cultivating private donors and new partnerships, and will enhance vital relationships with alumni, colleagues, and the community. The Dean will play a leading role in recruiting diverse and talented faculty, overseeing the development and mentoring of faculty at all levels, and supporting the faculty governance structure.  The Dean will be a leader of national stature with excellent listening, communication and interpersonal skills. The Dean will foster an environment that attracts and retains the best faculty, staff, and students who can meet the changing needs of the profession, and who will implement the School of Dentistry’s commitment to serving the public and vulnerable populations.
