DEAN OF THE FACULTY AND VICE PRESIDENT FOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

Skidmore College invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the Faculty and Vice President for Academic Affairs (DoF-VPAA).

Skidmore is a highly selective, nationally ranked liberal arts college, currently enrolling approximately 2,500 students in roughly 40 degree programs, including programs in both traditional liberal arts and pre-professional disciplines. The College’s principal mission is the education of predominantly full-time undergraduates, a diverse population of talented students who are eager to engage in the learning process. Skidmore’s faculty and staff create a challenging yet supportive environment that cultivates students’ intellectual and personal excellence, encouraging them to expand their expectations of themselves while engaging in research, scholarship, and study. In keeping with the College’s founding principle of linking theoretical with applied learning – and its more recent expression, “Creative Thought Matters” – the Skidmore curriculum balances a commitment to the liberal arts with an emphasis on integrated learning and interdisciplinarity, along with preparation for professions, civic leadership, and personal fulfillment.

Skidmore’s campus is located in what was, at the turn of the twentieth century, a beautiful park of summer residences in Saratoga Springs, New York. The region’s many attractions include the Saratoga National Battlefield, the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, ten museums, a number of spas, and the famed Saratoga Race Course for thoroughbred horse racing. Set in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains, Saratoga Springs is a half-hour drive from the New York State capital at Albany and a three-hour drive from New York City, Boston, and Montreal.  The area is also home to a thriving technology sector.

The College seeks a dynamic, visionary, and collaborative leader who can build upon its academic and programmatic strengths, promote the distinctive quality of its liberal arts education, and address the educational challenges the College will face in the 21st century. The Dean of the Faculty and Vice President for Academic Affairs is the chief academic officer of the College and provides intellectual leadership and administrative support for all academic departments and cross-disciplinary programs. The DoF-VPAA plays a central role in faculty recruitment, promotion, retention, and continuing professional development and works closely with the department chairs towards agreed upon goals.  The DoF-VPAA also works collaboratively with the President and other members of the College's senior staff on budgetary, academic, strategic planning, and educational policy issues. The ideal DoF-VPAA will have a strong grasp of the pedagogical, technological, economic, and social challenges and opportunities currently facing liberal arts colleges and a clearly articulated vision for the future of liberal arts education. The DoF-VPAA will work to continue the College's demonstrated commitment to recruiting and retaining a more diverse faculty and will have evidenced the ability to work creatively and collaboratively with the faculty in matters of College governance. Candidates should have experience in college-wide curriculum assessment and evaluation. Candidates must hold an earned doctorate or an appropriate terminal degree and have a record of teaching success and scholarly or artistic accomplishment. Candidates must also qualify for appointment at the rank of professor in one of the departments of the College.

The search process is currently underway and will continue until the position is filled. Nominations, inquiries, and expressions of interest should be forwarded, in confidence, to:
