INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGNER

The Computing and Information Services Department at Harvey Mudd College is seeking a highly qualified Instructional Designer to collaborate with faculty, students, and staff to support instructional goals and learning objectives.  Creative individuals who are interested in designing and implementing technological solutions to improve the learning environment are encouraged to apply. The position is full-time and benefits eligible, and reports to the Senior Director, Educational Technology Services. Starting pay rate is dependent upon qualifications. Summary of Job Responsibilities:

The Instructional Designer works with faculty, staff and students to design, develop, and improve learning experiences offered by Harvey Mudd College. Depending on the project, the designer may help develop both technological and pedagogical solutions for those in an instructional capacity on campus, as well as projects that synthesize the two. The Instructional Designer will carry out a variety of tasks including brief consultations to select appropriate instructional tools and methods, large-scale instructional projects for Harvey Mudd classes, and individual projects to support and promote the use of educational technology on campus.  The Instructional Designer works in close collaboration with an Educational Technology Services (ETS) team that consists of a Senior Director, Associate Director (Scientific and Research Computing Specialist), Instructional Technologist and Instructional Designer.

  • Bachelor's degree in education, instructional design, instructional technology, or a related field.
  • Minimum of two years working with instructional design & technology, preferably in the setting of higher education.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to adapt to and interact with various constituencies.  Ability to collaborate with faculty and subject matter experts from a variety of fields.  Organized, detail-oriented, creative, and self-motivated with the capability to engage in highly collaborative instructional design processes.  Evidence of ability to work well as part of a staff team dedicated to Educational Technology.    Background in learning theory and best practices for working with young adult learners.  Fluency in Microsoft Office, Google Apps for Education and other productivity tools.  Competence with an array of multimedia design tools.  Adaptability and eagerness to learn new skills, or software as the job demands.  Ability to solve problems and exercise independent judgment in creative and productive ways.
