Dean of the College of Environment and Design

The University of Georgia (UGA) invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean, College of Environment and Design (CED). The Dean serves as the chief administrative and academic officer of the College, reporting to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs.

UGA is currently ranked among the top 20 public universities in U.S. News & World Report. The University’s main campus is located in Athens, approximately 65 miles northeast of Atlanta, with extended campuses in Atlanta, Griffin, Gwinnett, and Tifton.

UGA was founded in 1785 by the Georgia General Assembly as the first state-chartered University in the country. UGA employs approximately 1,800 full-time instructional faculty and more than 7,600 full-time staff. The University’s enrollment exceeds 36,000 students including over 27,500 undergraduates and over 8,500 graduate and professional students. Academic programs reside in 17 schools and colleges, as well as a medical partnership with Augusta University housed on the UGA Health Sciences Campus in Athens. The Dean serves as the chief administrative officer for the academic, research, and service programs of the College of Environment and Design. The position is responsible for strategic planning and analysis of the College’s operations, research productivity with an emphasis on increasing external funding; curriculum development for College programs, budget development and management, fundraising from private sources, CED property management, programmatic planning, implementation, and assessment. The Dean will represent the college in university functions and activities. Additionally, the Dean works collaboratively with other deans on campus-wide initiatives.

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and characteristics:

  •  A terminal academic degree in landscape architecture, architecture or related discipline is required. This includes the MLA, M.Arch, or PhD in landscape architecture, architecture, historic preservation, city and regional planning or other related professional degrees. A record of academic performance, or exceptional professional experience, deemed commensurate with appointment at the rank of Professor is required. Candidates must show clear and convincing evidence of high levels of attainment in their academic or professional work, including national or international recognition in their field.   •  A visionary leader with significant accomplishments in teaching, research, and service, and/or a record of professional achievements related to environmental design
  • Demonstrated administrative and leadership abilities to promote excellence and to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, University of Georgia administrators, and alumni to promote the mission of the College
  • Ability to articulate, promote, provide support and advocacy of creativity, the value of design and interdisciplinarity. A deep understanding of the creative problem solving process as it relates to the environmental, historical and cultural context of place is critical.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to communicate the mission and importance of the programs in the College of Environment and Design to external audiences
  • Ability and willingness to provide leadership in generating public and private financial and non-financial support for the College
  • A commitment to diversity
  • Demonstrated experience with budgetary development and management
  • Familiarity with the public, commercial, and nongovernmental organizations associated with environmental design
  • Ability to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and to be conversant across professional groups in discussions of design, planning, preservation, sustainability, and integrated technology is preferred

The College of Environment and Design (CED) at the University of Georgia is leading the way in educating new generations of landscape architects, planners, and historic preservationists.
The College of Environment and Design is focused on landscape architecture, environmental planning, and historic preservation, including historic landscape preservation. The College of Environment and Design includes a four year accredited Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (BLA)program, a three-year accredited Master’s of Landscape Architecture (MLA) as well as an accelerated track, a two-year Master’s degree in Historic Preservation (MHP), an accredited two-year Master’s of Environmental Planning and Design, a three-year PhD in Environmental Design and Planning, a Certificate in Historic Preservation Studies, and a Certificate in Historic Landscape Preservation. Many of our students also elect to participate in the nationally renowned Environmental Ethics Certificate program administered by the college while others enroll in a dual law degree and historic preservation degree program. The College also offers dual degrees in preservation and environmental planning. The College houses outreach services through the Center for Community Design and Preservation through which its service projects are estimated to benefit the Georgia economy by $3 million per year.

The landscape architecture program, founded in 1928, became the School of Environmental Design in 1969 and the College of Environment and Design in 2001. The academic unit has established a rich tradition of teaching and scholarship and maintains one of the largest and most diverse faculty in the nation. The Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (BLA) Program is one of the largest and most highly regarded programs in the United States. Over the past several years Design Intelligence has consistently ranked the BLA in the top five programs in the nation. The MLA is ranked 9th in the nation for 2017. The MHP is also one of the best of its kind in the nation and annually attracts students from across the globe to study the preservation of buildings, sites, and cultural landscapes. The MEPD was fully accredited in 2017 by the Planning Accreditation Board. While the PhD program just started in 2016 it is already garnering significant international interest.

The CED is dedicated to a new UGA experiential learning initiative and, therefore, educates students through internships and real world projects conducted by the Public Service and Outreach wing of the college or in conjunction with UGA’s Archway Partnership and the Georgia Downtown Renaissance program in the Carl Vinson Institute. The College also offers experiential learning in the Sustainability Lab and the Cultural Landscape Lab.
