An Invitation to Apply for the Position of

Dean

University of Massachusetts School of Law

Dartmouth, Massachusetts

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (UMass Dartmouth), a dynamic and distinctive division of one of the nation’s premier public universities, seeks an inspiring, enterprising and dedicated academic and administrative leader to serve as Dean of its School of Law. The School of Law (UMass Law) is fully accredited by the American Bar Association, and is the only publicly supported law school in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, dedicated to providing access to and opportunity for an excellent legal education at a reasonable cost.

Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, the Dean serves as the principal academic and administrative officer for UMass Law, one of eight colleges and schools located at its campus in Southeastern Massachusetts. UMass Law currently enrolls 205 total students. In addition to its JD program, the School also offers three joint degree programs: 3+3 baccalaureate/JD, JD/MBA, and JD/Public Policy.

The University is looking for an innovative leader who understands the financial and pedagogical challenges facing legal education today and is eager and able to work within the context of a shared governance structure to craft successful and sustainable solutions to promote the School of Law as the only publicly supported law school in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and one that is fully integrated within the entire University of Massachusetts. The next dean should also have an appetite and the skills to engage alumni and other friends and supporters of UMass Law in the noble and unifying mission of the School of Law and in contributing to its future. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to diversity, inclusion and social justice, a dedication for an accessible public law school experience, a readiness to engage in multi-disciplinary projects across the entire University, and a passion for preparing students for careers that add exceptional value to their personal growth, to their families, communities and country.

A review of applications and nominations will commence on May 1, 2017 and campus interviews will occur in September. The start date for the next Dean will be mutually determined by the Provost and the selected candidate. All inquiries, applications, and nominations for this opportunity should be sent electronically and in confidence to:
