Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer, Wexner Medical Center

An invitation to apply for the position of

Executive Vice President, Chief Executive Officer

Wexner Medical Center

Columbus, Ohio

The Ohio State University, one of the nation’s premier public research universities, seeks a visionary, ambitious, and inspirational leader to serve as the next Executive Vice President & Chief Executive Officer (EVP) of the Wexner Medical Center (WMC). Ohio State is a leader in health care innovation and has limitless possibilities to pioneer cutting-edge, interdisciplinary approaches to health care delivery, research, and teaching that benefit the people of Ohio, the nation, and the world. The Wexner Medical Center has expanded dramatically in its clinical and research footprint and boasts a strong foundation for the next EVP to propel OSU towards increasing impact and prominence among top academic medical centers.

Located in the thriving city of Columbus, the Wexner Medical Center provides high-quality clinical care in virtually every medical discipline; it is nationally ranked in 10 out of 15 adult specialties and is recognized as high performing in 13 out of 17 common procedures and conditions. Leveraging the talent of more than 1,200 physicians, the resources of seven hospitals, and a network of over 100 other locations and community-based care centers, WMC manages more than one million patient visits annually. The Medical Center’s volume and impact continue to grow on an annual basis, and WMC enjoys a dominant clinical market position in an increasingly competitive landscape. The WMC is in solid financial position with $4.3 billion in operating revenue, double-digit operating margins, and a nearly $3 billion capital program underway, which includes a new state-of-the-art 860 bed in-patient hospital projected to open in 2026.

Reporting to the Ohio State University President, the EVP sets the vision and leads a complex and expansive healthcare enterprise. The EVP of the WMC will work closely with the President, Executive Vice President and Provost, and the Executive Vice President for the Knowledge Enterprise to guide the critical mission areas of the university. The EVP also plays a critical role in linking the Health Science Colleges to the clinical mission and supporting research activities, including providing research space and other resources. The EVP is responsible to the university’s Board of Trustees for development and strategic allocation of resources, planning and delivery of medical services, and operation, oversight, and coordination of the health sciences entities. The EVP will work with a strong executive team to implement plans that secure Ohio State’s position as a national leader in clinical care delivery, health sciences education, and research.

The candidate must possess leadership qualities that inspire, attract, and foster excellence across a broad portfolio of activities as well as a solid understanding of academics and the dynamic health care landscape. The EVP position necessitates a collaborative, business-minded, transparent, authentic, accomplished, and skillful leader who is focused on driving meaningful innovation, quality, and financial performance in Ohio State’s clinical enterprises; forging productive relationships with academic partners throughout the university; working in tandem with the Provost to develop a long-term strategy for excellence in health sciences; generating philanthropic resources; developing partnerships with external organizations to advance the mission of the WMC; and promoting a culture of accountability throughout the organization. The EVP will be responsible for philanthropy, community engagement, and external partnership development. The EVP will also bring a strong record as a scholar and leader and have deep knowledge of funds flow arrangements, health care delivery models, organizational structures, and how the tripartite mission areas can interact for optimal impact. Above all, the EVP will be a genuine, warm, engaging, and empathetic leader who demonstrates high emotional intelligence, and has a track record of a personal and professional commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and health equity.
