Rhode Island College (RIC) invites nominations and applications for individuals interested in an exciting leadership opportunity as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Reporting to the President, the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs provides the academic leadership to ensure the college’s excellence in its curricula, teaching, research and public outreach. The Provost provides leadership in an innovative community of scholars, is responsible for the vitality of the College’s academic life and the intellectual well-being of students, staff and faculty, and brings the best academic practices to a culture committed to continual improvement.  The Provost is the Chief Academic Officer of the College, advises the President on policies and operations, is a major participant in the College’s strategic planning, oversees special Centers and Partnerships, and sets measurable goals for all of the College’s educational programs.

Rhode Island College is a nationally accredited and comprehensive undergraduate and graduate degree granting institution founded in 1854 as a teacher’s college.  It is the state’s first public institution of higher education.  The College now offers 90 undergraduate majors and programs, 42 master’s degrees and two doctoral degree programs in five schools: the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the Feinstein School of Education and Human Development, the School of Management, the School of Nursing, and the School of Social Work. Located on a 180-acre campus in the Mount Pleasant section of Providence, Rhode Island, the College combines a suburban atmosphere with easy access to the benefits and resources of the capital city. The College serves approximately 8,500 residential and commuter students and has 360 full-time faculty, approximately 400 adjunct faculty and 600 staff members. The annual budget is $201 million. Rhode Island College is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and has also received accreditation for specific programs from the following agencies: Council on Social Work Education, National Association of Schools of Art and Design, National Association of Schools of Music, National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification, National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

Responsibilities and duties of the Provost include the following: supervision and mentoring for the college Deans and other academic officers, empowering them as individuals and professionals to ensure that the programs of the College meet high standards of quality and fairness, including regional and professional accreditation; development of the budget for Academic Affairs; collaboration  with the Vice President of Student Affairs (Student Success) to ensure a high-quality experience for the College’s students and the Vice President for Administration and Finance to provide adequate and appropriate funding for the facilities and operational infrastructure for students and faculty and with the Rhode Island College Foundation to facilitate fundraising for academic purposes; performance as chief executive in the absence of the President; and direction of the selection, supervision and evaluation of all professional staff employed by the various units within the division.

 

Required qualifications include an earned doctorate, exemplary academic credentials that demonstrate scholarly achievement, engender respect from the academy and the community at large, and qualifications for appointment as a full professor with tenure. Further, candidates will have higher education administrative experience (e.g., department chair, dean or equivalent).

 

Prior experience working in a collective bargaining environment is highly desirable.
