Vice President and Vice Provost for Equity and Inclusion

Vice President and Vice Provost for Equity and Inclusion

The Evergreen State College invites applications and nominations for the position of Vice President and Vice Provost for Equity and Inclusion. Following on the recent appointment of President George Bridges, this position represents an excellent opportunity to join his executive team, an engaged faculty and staff, and creative students to provide academic leadership for a dynamic institution which holds a historically pivotal role in innovative higher education at the national level.

Evergreen has established a national reputation for its leadership in developing interdisciplinary, team-taught, thematic learning communities. Serving a population of remarkable diversity and complexity that belie its size, the College maintains many of the vital and distinctive practices that have been its hallmarks since its founding: a dynamic curriculum characterized predominantly by full-time, team-taught, interdisciplinary, multi-quarter programs; narrative evaluations of student work; shared governance structures; and a progressive learning culture where students engage with and take responsibility for their own work.

Founded in 1967, opened in 1971, and located in Olympia, Washington, Evergreen is an innovative and vibrant public liberal arts and sciences college with an undergraduate program, three graduate programs, public service centers, an urban campus program in Tacoma, Washington, and reservation-based programs that, together, constitute a unique academic community. Designated as the liberal arts college within Washington’s public higher education system, Evergreen is an innovative, experimental institution with a student enrollment of approximately 4,000, and eighty-eight percent of Evergreen graduates are employed or pursue graduate or professional studies within one year of graduation.

The inaugural Vice President and Vice Provost for Equity and Inclusion will provide strategic, transformational leadership in building an equity-minded, student-ready, inclusive institution that welcomes and supports diverse students, staff, and faculty to thrive.  The position reports to the President and the Provost, is a member of the President’s Senior Leadership Group (i.e., the President’s “cabinet”), chairs the College’s Equity and Inclusion Council, and is responsible for the allocation of the President’s Equity Fund.  The position advances an equity mindset in all college-wide initiatives, including strategic planning, budgeting, and resource allocation.

The successful candidate will apply personal judgment and expertise to design several aspects of the Vice President/Vice Provost role and position structure. The position will establish collaborative partnerships with faculty, staff, and students, and, building upon the recent 2016-17 Strategic Equity Plan, engage the campus community in developing and implementing initiatives to eliminate gaps in equity and student achievement, and address institutional goals focusing on campus climate, and recruitment and retention of students, staff and faculty.  In close collaboration with the Provost and other senior academic leaders, the inaugural VP/VP will develop an approach for the instruction, implementation, and ongoing support of pedagogical strategies to advance a culture of inquiry, grounded in equity, aimed at supporting the success of all of our students.

The position provides leadership for emerging equity initiatives on faculty and staff hiring and development. The position coordinates and provides operational direction to staff and faculty working on professional development programs across the College, including the Director of the planned Teaching and Learning Center, Academic Deans, and staff in Student Affairs and the Office of Human Resource Services.  The position collaborates with faculty and staff in the Faculty Hiring office and the Office of Human Resources Services to develop strategies for recruiting and retaining a more diverse faculty and staff, provide anti-bias programs for all hiring committees, and to plan and assess efforts to achieve the college’s equity hiring and retention goals.
