General Counsel

Manhattan College’s General Counsel will serve as the principal legal officer for the College, with overall responsibility for the vision and leadership of the College’s legal strategy.  Reporting to the President, the General Counsel will provide legal advice and counsel to the President, Board of Trustees, and other members of the College community on a broad range of legal matters affecting the College.  General Counsel will also serve as the College’s coordinator for Governmental Relations, representing the College as needed to external constituencies.

 

Manhattan College is seeking candidates with a J.D. and at least 8 to 10 years of legal experience, admission to the NYS Bar, and preferably a solid understanding of matters related to higher education law.  The right candidate will possess a record of professional experience that demonstrates progressive responsibilities and significant interaction with senior leadership teams, and will possess superb analytical, research, writing, advocacy, and problem-solving skills. Experience in higher education is strongly preferred.  Experience serving in a prominent leadership role and working effectively with various constituencies, including governmental entities, is a clear advantage.  The ability to commit to the Lasallian Catholic mission of the College and its diverse and inclusive community is required.

 

As chief legal officer for the College, the General Counsel oversees and manages the provision of all legal services to the institution to ensure maximum protection of its legal rights and to maintain its operations within the limits prescribed by law. Provides strategic guidance, consultation, and support to senior administrators on a comprehensive range of legal and associated issues involved in carrying out the mission of the institution, including policies, procedures, rules and regulations, and laws pertaining to government affairs, real estate transactions, facilities, financing, contracts and grants, tax matters, fundraising, liability and insurance matters, lobbying, public monies and purchases, intellectual property, affiliations, corporate governance, NCAA, employment and discrimination, faculty matters, student issues and other laws and regulations.  Coordinates with outside counsel, oversees litigation and provides training and seminars for campus.
