The University of South Alabama (USA) invites nominations, inquiries, and applications for the position of Dean of the College of Nursing. The mission of the College of Nursing is to provide quality, innovative educational programs to a diverse student body, to participate in research and scholarly activities, and to provide service to the University, the profession, and the public. The College accomplishes this by providing a caring, engaging environment for the empowerment of student learning potential, the professional development of faculty, and the promotion of the nursing profession.

Position

The Dean of the College of Nursing reports to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and serves as the executive officer of the College of Nursing. The Dean is expected to guide the development of the College of Nursing in line with the University’s strategic priorities. She/he will promote research, scholarship, and creative activity among the faculty, encourage student learning and retention, and nurture an environment focused on providing the highest quality of care. The Dean is also expected to foster collaborations with healthcare partners throughout the region to include the University of South Alabama Health System, the University of South Alabama College of Medicine, and the University of South Alabama Pat Capps Covey College of Allied Health Professions.

The Dean of the College of Nursing must work with administrative leadership and faculty of the College to effectively plan and implement curricular efforts, strategically seek and allocate College resources to ensure excellence in all programs, and lead by example in the promotion of professional growth and development. The Dean will advance nursing science, doctoral education, interdisciplinary collaboration, and clinical services.

Preferred Qualifications

The successful candidate should have an earned doctorate in nursing or related discipline from an accredited institution and it is expected that the Dean will possess academic credentials commensurate with the appointment at the rank of associate or full professor. In addition, the Dean should possess:

  • Successful leadership and administrative experience;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • The ability to attract and retain innovative and creative faculty;
  • Broad knowledge of the healthcare landscape;
  • Proven experience in fiscal planning and management;
  • Strong commitment to community engagement;
  • Demonstrated commitment to nurturing an inclusive and diverse learning environment;
  • Experience with curriculum development including online education, simulation, and the innovative use of technology;
  • And unquestionable character and integrity.
