Texas Tech University (Texas Tech) invites nominations and applications for the Dean of the School of Law & W. Frank Newton Professor of Law search. The Dean will serve as a strong advocate on behalf of the School to internal and external university stakeholders in addition to representing the School of Law and Texas Tech University on the national and international stage.

The School of Law boasts a rich history spanning more than 50 years. Since opening, the School of Law has graduated thousands of students, including the first woman to head a major federal law enforcement agency, the Army's highest-ranked military legal officer, and some of the nation's top litigators. Ranked second in student satisfaction among U.S. law schools and six-time ranked "Best Value Law School" by The National Jurist, it is no surprise that Texas Tech's School of Law attracts professors who are passionate about teaching.

Texas Tech's School of Law is known for its robust clinical programs, academic centers, ten dual-degree programs, concentration programs, a regional externship program that operates in Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio and Lubbock, a legal writing program ranked #15 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, and a nationally recognized advocacy program that has earned 96 regional and 40 national and international championships. The School's moot-court program was ranked #1 in the nation [2016 Blakely Advocacy Institute]. The Position

Reporting to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean serves as the chief executive officer of the School of Law. The Dean will work closely with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and the legal community to achieve the goals of the law school and will provide the leadership and vision required to fulfill its mission. The Dean will supervise strategic planning, curriculum development, and alumni relations, and is responsible for providing academic leadership, revenue generation, budget formulation and execution, and personnel management. In addition, the Dean serves as a member of the Deans and Provost Councils, which provide leadership in determining academic policies and procedures and in developing long-range plans for the University. The Dean will foster an atmosphere of growing excellence in research and scholarship; support and focus on the success of faculty, staff and students; and continue to develop strong relationships with alumni.

The Dean also provides leadership for programmatic, college-wide, and university-wide accreditation efforts, including the American Bar Association. The School of Law is a member of the Association of American Law Schools. The Dean will serve as the W. Frank Newton Professor of Law. The endowed professorship supports a salary supplement, research, scholarship, professional development, and other areas.

Qualifications and Characteristics

Candidates for the Dean of the School of Law at Texas Tech University must possess the following qualifications and experience:

• A Juris Doctor (J.D.) or other terminal degree in law, and at least ten years of experience in the teaching and/or practice of law;
• Substantial credentials appropriate for an endowed, tenured appointment at the rank of professor;
• Demonstrated strategic, ethical, and effective leadership skills; a proven track-record as an innovator and an effective communicator with a high level of integrity and emotional intelligence;
• Experience with national and international issues affecting legal and graduate education;
• Experience in fundraising or the interest and potential in partnering with university advancement officers to secure external gifts, grants, and funding to support law school programs;
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively within the University, the School of Law, and the larger legal community; the ability to motivate and inspire faculty; and a commitment to shared governance.
• A demonstrated commitment to diversity.

The University

Established in 1923, Texas Tech University is a public, state-designated national research university that is comprehensive in scope. It is among the highest level of Carnegie-classified (Highest Research Activity) doctoral granting universities, one of 115 U.S. institutions with such designation. Texas Tech University's campus covers 1,839 acres and is comprised of 10 colleges, a graduate school and the School of Law. The last decade has brought tremendous growth to the University, with enrollments growing over thirty percent and an additional 10,000 students.
