Western Michigan University seeks nominations and applications for the position of Associate Provost for the Diether H. Haenicke Institute for Global Education. The Diether H. Haenicke Institute for Global Education aspires to be a worldwide leader in developing opportunities for global learning, discovery, and engagement. Founded in 1998, the institute serves as Western Michigan University’s hub for international exchange, activity, and initiatives and as a resource to guide and support internationalization of the academic and campus environment. With more than 80 faculty and staff, the Institute’s units include CELCIS—intensive English program, Fulbright support, Immigration Services, International Admissions and Services, International Student Activities, and Study Abroad.  In addition, the Institute hosts the following centers: Center for African Development Policy Research, Confucius Institute at WMU, Michitoshi Soga Japan Center, and the Timothy Light Center for Chinese Studies.

The associate provost serves as a senior administrative officer who reports directly to the provost and is responsible for the academic, programmatic, administrative, and fiscal leadership of the Institute. The university has recently completed a strategic plan that speaks to three pillars – learner centered, discovery driven, and globally engaged.  The associate provost will provide university-wide leadership for continued global outreach, working with the Faculty Senate International Education Council.  

The successful candidate must possess an earned terminal degree in an academic or professional field, a successful record of administrative experience, including the management of a complex budget and organization, a record of distinguished professional accomplishment and demonstrated intellectual leadership, fluency in both English and at least one additional language, demonstrated experience building a thriving international student body, among other required and desired qualifications.
