Syracuse University seeks an experienced, energetic, and collaborative leader to serve as the next Dean of the Martin J. Whitman School of Management. Syracuse University is a highly selective institution that enrolls nearly 22,000 students with a diverse array of talent from a variety of backgrounds. Students come from all 50 states and 120 countries. Approximately 21 percent of undergraduates at Syracuse are Pell Grant recipients, and 13.1 percent are first-generation college students. Minority students represent approximately 25 percent of the total student population at Syracuse.

With a Chancellor in the third year of his tenure, a Provost in the first year of her tenure, and several deans in their first or second year, Syracuse is at a liminal moment in its history and seeks inspired and bold academic leadership to increase its national and global impact while nimbly navigating the challenges of a changing higher education landscape.

Founded in 1919, the Whitman School is home to 3,271 total undergraduate, masters, and PhD students, and approximately 100 faculty. In Fall 2016, there were 1,800 undergraduate students and 1,471 masters and PhD students enrolled at Whitman. From undergraduate programs that emphasize internship, community service, and global business awareness to doctoral programs centered on cutting-edge methodology and research, the School’s programs empower its graduates to enter the marketplace as motivated, strategic thinkers and innovators. Published in numerous leading journals, Whitman faculty are committed to quality teaching and advancing management theory and practice in accounting, entrepreneurship, finance, management, marketing, retail management, real estate, and supply chain management. The School is ranked among the top 50 undergraduate programs in the country by U.S. News & World Report and #23 by Business Week. The MBA program is ranked in the top 75 by Business Week. Several academic specialty areas are rated highly by their peers including entrepreneurship at #12 by U.S. News & World Report. The School continues to innovate the delivery of its distance MBA program, now ranked in the top 50 by U.S. News.

The successful candidate will bring to the role an enterprising spirit and the ability to lead strategically through effective communication, collaboration, and the strength of good ideas. She or he will engage external partners and alumni in the work of the Whitman School, securing resources and building relationships of enduring institutional value to the college. The Dean will advance the Whitman School’s national and international prominence in research. She or he will also act to maintain and secure the high quality of the School’s undergraduate, masters, and PhD programs.  Working with the Provost, faculty, academic leadership, and staff to ensure a cooperative and collaborative environment, the Dean will cultivate the entrepreneurial spirit of enablement, achievement, and autonomy for all members of the Whitman community.
