Duties/Responsibilities:

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, invites nominations and applications for the position of Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research Finance & Administration (AVCRFA).  The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, the state’s flagship and land grant institution, is a Carnegie doctoral research university rated R1 (very high research activity) and is listed in the Center for Measuring University Performance (CMUP) as a Top 25 public research university.  The Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research Finance & Administration reports to and directly supports the Vice Chancellor for Research & Engagement (VCRE) by providing advice and counsel regarding strategic administrative, financial, staffing, staff development, physical resources, and oversight of the Office of Research & Engagement and the campus research centers and joint institutes. This position serves as a primary advisor to the VCRE on financial, human resource, and operational activities impacting the VCRE reporting units and for other areas within the University of Tennessee that are impacted by research and innovation activities and functions. This position makes funding allocation decisions and manages a variety of funding programs in support of advancing and increasing the research enterprise. S/he serves as an advocate and an advisor for research administration and operational activities.  S/he effectively interfaces in a leadership capacity on behalf of the VCRE with central administration, colleges, centers, and institutes.

This position directs and coordinates the financial, administrative, and human resources operations for the VCRE and reporting units.  Responsibilities include developing, overseeing, and directing all financial and budget management as well as the daily operational, administrative, and human resource support of the units reporting to the Vice Chancellor; providing guidance to other AVCRs, directors, and staff; developing, managing, analyzing, and providing leadership in all aspects of the efficient and effective management of reporting units including personnel, budgets, purchasing, inventory, facilities, and technology infrastructure.  This position will also oversee staff development and technology support for ORE staff.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in accounting, business management, finance, or equivalent
  • Minimum ten years of experience in finance/accounting and human resource related activities
  • Supervisory experience

Preferred Experience and Qualifications:

  • Experience working within the financial and HR structure of an academic, research institute, foundation, or national laboratory environment preferred
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to multitask in a fast paced working environment
  • Proven ability to manage competing priorities, manage several complex projects simultaneously, and meet time sensitive deadlines
  • Keen ability to extrapolate information across a broad base of programs
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills with ability to work collaboratively with others at various levels and disciplines, both within and outside the University
  • In-depth knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and ability to apply those principles
  • Understanding of goals of research, process for obtaining and managing a research program
  • Ability to develop budgets, provide financial recommendations, and provide insight to support decision making
  • Ability to read and analyze financial statements, provide financial forecasts, and provide financial recommendations
  • Experience with grant and contract accounting
  • Strong analytical, planning, and decision-making abilities
