The Electrical Engineering Department at The University of Texas at Arlington invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position with a focus on sensor networks and the Internet of Things (IOT), with a tentative date of starting employment in Fall 2017. This position is part of the College of Engineering’s search for 12 tenure-oriented faculty members in thematic areas which are research thrusts of UTA’s Strategic Plan 2020: Bold Solutions | Global Impact: Health and the Human Condition, Sustainable Urban Communities, Global Environmental Impact, and Data-Driven Discovery. The key objective is to hire faculty members with outstanding qualifications who share the University’s core values of high standards of excellence in teaching, innovative and collaborative research, and service, combined with fostering an open and inclusive environment. Major emphasis will be on potential collaboration for research with faculty members from other departments across UTA and outside the University.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Teach and develop undergraduate and graduate courses in the area of sensor networks and IOT, with possible focus areas including development and use of practical multiscale, multifunction sensor systems, potentially operating over large spatial areas and directed toward areas of national importance such as environmental monitoring, megacity infrastructural health and usage monitoring, and human patterns and health monitoring. Develop externally funded research programs that result in publications in leading scholarly journals; present research work in leading scholarly conferences; supervise graduate students; and serve on departmental, college, and university committees.

 

Minimum Qualifications

An earned Ph.D. degree (All-But-Dissertation, ABD, cases will be considered) in electrical engineering or a closely related field. The candidate should have a background in an emerging research area related to sensor networks and IOT. Candidates must also show a strong commitment to teaching excellence at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

This growth has been concomitant with growth in research expenditures, collaboration, innovation and entrepreneurship by faculty and students. The college currently has eight active NSF CAREER grants, four of which were awarded in 2015-16. Electrical Engineering Department faculty are active in the areas of electrical power systems, microgrids, power conversion and control and energy storage; sensors and robotics; teaming robots; unmanned aerial systems; quantum optics, nanophotonics and optical amplification; implantable sensors and systems and nano-biosensors; opportunistic sensing, radar and wireless sensor networks; and human performance, multimedia and signal processing, with per-faculty research expenditures totaling more than $290,000. The department collaborates with many firms in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and has extensive grant funding from the National Science Foundation, Department of Defense, and other government agencies.
