Institutional Review Board Chair (Senior Administrative Program Support)

JOB SUMMARY

The University of Connecticut School of Social Work is seeking applicants for a Senior Administrative Program Support position at its Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) research division. This position will work under the general direction of the DMHAS research division's Managing Director of Research, and under the supervision of the University of Connecticut School of Social Work's Associate Dean for Research. This position will serve as the Institutional Review Board (IRB) Chair and is required to review all applications for DMHAS sponsored or approved research protocols, and research sponsored by non-DMHAS institutions involving human subjects conducted in state operated facilities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The IRB Chair completes or ensures completion of the following: ensures compliance with regulations governing IRB activities; schedules full board meetings; prepares meeting agendas; produces IRB minutes; maintains IRB records as outlined in federal policy; maintains a current list of all projects under the review of the IRB including actions taken and corresponding dates; notifies investigators, and others as appropriate, of IRB actions; schedules and conducts timely reviews of currently approved studies; conducts expedited reviews when applicable; provides orientation to new IRB members, and facilitates ongoing education in federal regulations; represents the DMHAS IRB in communications with investigators, DMHAS staff, and others as required.  The Chair recruits and retains IRB members and ensures that the composition of the board (board membership) meets the federal requirements. The Chair ensures that all researchers have received appropriate training to conduct research.  The Chair also insures that all the conditions necessary for retaining the DMHAS IRB Federal Wide Assurance are met.  Must maintain Certified IRB Credentials.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • Five to six years of related experience with at least two years experience working as an advanced or senior team member or working as a project lead in a research environment
  • Experience with IRB protocols (preparing, reviewing, amending, or renewing)
  • Knowledge of the common rule and commitment to ethical foundations of human subjects research
  • Certification in human subjects (Certified IRB Professional credentials)
  • Strong administrative/organizational skills
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Working proficiency in Excel and Microsoft Office and the ability to learn and use other software

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree or other advanced degree
  • Previous service on an IRB (as a member or a chair)
  • Service as a project director in a research study
  • Experience working in federal, state or local government settings
  • Experience with compliance and privacy responsibilities in a health care agency
  • Previous administrative leadership experience in an organization

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a part-time (50%), 12-month position with an anticipated start date of December 17, 2021.  Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
