Position Title: Director of the School of Built Environment, tenured at Associate or Full Professor

Bowling Green State University invites applications for the position of Director of the new School of Built Environment. The College is committed to its mission to develop technical and design professionals for leadership roles who are adept at the application of technology, responsive to change, innovative in problem solving, and skillful in communication.

About The College of Technology, Architecture and Applied Engineering: The College is proud of its portfolio of distinctive undergraduate and graduate programs administered through four departments: Architecture and Environmental Design, Construction Management Technology, Engineering Technologies, and Visual Communication & Technology Education. Undergraduate programs/majors in these departments include architecture, aviation studies, construction management, electronics and computer engineering technology, engineering technology, learning design, and visual communication technology. Graduate programs include a Master of Architecture, a Master of Education in Learning Design, a Master in Technology Management, and a collaborative Ph.D. in Technology Management.

About the School of Built Environment: Within the college, the School of Built Environment will serve as the nucleus for an envisioned multi-disciplinary academic unit. Initially, the School will include the Department of Architecture and Environmental Design and the Department of Construction Management, two established academic units. The formation of the School of Built Environment is pending approval. This approval process is expected to be completed by the time of hire. The Architecture program was granted initial candidacy status by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) in 2013 and continuing status in 2015. Initial full-accreditation by the NAAB is on track for 2017. The Construction Management program is accredited by American Council for Construction Education (ACCE)

Primary Function: The Director will serve as the primary administrator and representative of the School and is expected to provide leadership in the areas of accreditation, innovation, program growth, laboratory and facility enhancement, fundraising, and development of students, faculty and staff.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership by facilitating excellence in teaching, research/creative endeavors, and professional service.

  • Provide leadership in student recruitment and retention in both undergraduate and graduate programs.

  • Capitalize on the strengths and synergies of the individual departments to create a unified and cohesive school.

  • Manage the fiscal affairs for the School in collaboration with department leaders.

  • Provide leadership for securing Initial accreditation by the NAAB for Architecture and the continuation of ACCE accreditation for Construction Management.

  • Develop and promote industry partnerships in Construction Management and Architecture.

  • Initiate and promote a Center for the Built Environment, which is intended to be an innovative research and engagement arm of the School of Built Environment.

  • Lead initiatives related to the development of Construction Management lab facilities.

Required Qualifications:

  • Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

    1. A master’s degree in Architecture (M. Arch) plus professional registration in architecture
      or

    2. An earned doctorate in architecture, construction management, civil engineering, architectural engineering, or related Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) field.

  • Professional experience in Architecture, Architectural Engineering, Construction Management, or Construction Engineering or a closely related field.

  • Exemplary teaching, research and service credentials appropriate to the rank of associate or full professor with tenure.

Preferred Qualification:

  • Professional experience in more than one of the fields associated with architectural design and construction management.

  • A demonstrated working knowledge of both architectural practices and construction management practices in the United States.

  • Exemplary teaching, research and service credentials appropriate to the rank of full professor with tenure.

  • Proven record of scholarship, research, and development.

  • Proven record of leadership and administrative skills.

  • Experience with budget management.

  • Experience in working effectively with diverse groups and disciplines.

  • Academic administrative experience.

  • Experience with NAAB or ACCE or other related accreditation.

  • Professional licensure recognized by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) or The National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES).

Salary and Position: The salary is competitive and commensurate with academic preparation and experience and in keeping with the candidate’s experience and credentials. This is a twelve-month renewable faculty position.  Alternatively, a nine-month renewable faculty position, with additional summer contract is negotiable.  Full benefits package is available.
